2023 French Open Second Round Matchups

ATP – French Open

Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Thanasi Kokkinakis

Favorite Stan Wawrinka beat first round opponent Albert Ramos-Vinolas, but the chalk in this had to work. Ramos-Vinolas pushed Wawrinka to 5 sets and 2 tiebreakers.

Wawrinka should be okay on Wednesday, but that amount of work in the first round isn’t what you want. Thanasi Kokkinakis beat 20-seed Daniel Evans in three sets.

Kokkinakis should be fresher. Give the underdog a chance.

2023 French Open Pick: Thanasi Kokkinakis +138

Matteo Arnaldi vs. Denis Shapovalov

Arnaldi is the slight favorite over Shapovalov even though Matteo is unranked and Shapovalov is the French Open’s 26-seed. The 22-year-old Arnaldi played well in his fist round tournament, rallying after losing the first set to win three straight sets over opponent Daniel Elahi Galan.

Shapovalov required 5 sets to get by Brandon Nakashima. This should be a tight match. At the end, Shapovalov is the pick. Arnaldi looked better in his first round victory, but Denis fought the better opponent.

2023 French Open Pick: Denis Shapovalov -106

Fabio Fognini vs. Jason Kubler

The chalk in this stepped onto the court for his first match at the 2023 French Open at Roland- Garros and proceeded to dominate 10-seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Underdog Jason Kubler struggled versus Facundo Diaz Acosta, losing 2 sets on his way to a 3 to 2 set victory. Although Kubler is 6 years younger, Fognini looked great against Auger-Aliassime. The chalk gets it done.

2023 French Open Pick: Fabio Fognini -161

WTA – French Open

Bernarda Pera vs. Donna Vekic

There’s a reason 28-year-old American Bernarda Pera isn’t as big of an underdog in this as one might expect. In her first round contest, Pera handled a very good tennis player in Anett Kontaveit in straight sets.

Donna Vekic, the chalk in this, also won her first match at the 2023 French Open. Pera will play tough, but Vekic has the edge. Donna is 18-7 in singles tournaments this season and has won a tournament.

2023 French Open Pick: Donna Vekic -154

Elise Mertens vs. Camila Osorio

Unseeded Camila Osorio beat Ana Bogdan in her first match. Osorio bested Bogdan 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

28-seed Elise Mertens dispatched of Viktoria Hruncakova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Osorio is a good player, but Mertens looked great in her win. Give Elise the edge.

2023 French Open Pick: Elise Mertens -135

Magdalena Frech vs. Kamilla Rakhimova

21-year-old Russian Kamilla Rakhimova easily beat Sara Bejlek 6-0, 6-3 in her first round contest. Rakhimova has the look of an up and comer.

Frech beat Shuai Zhang in straight sets. This should be a tight match. Although Frech is a deserving favorite, Rakhimova offers odds that make her the play.

2023 French Open Pick: Kamilla Rakhimova +122
