A New Team in the lEad

It took some time, but FC Cincinnati now heads the leaderboard by a healthy margin. They are the favored team over LAFC, which is the season’s second-favorite team to win the 2023 title. The Garys are now eight points ahead of New England in the Eastern Conference and ten points ahead of leading Western Conference club St. Louis. Cincinnati boasts an ideal combination of offense and defense. They scored 39 goals across 23 matches played while allowing 25 goals.

The Orange and Blue have it all, including an incredible 15-6-2 record. When looking for a favorite, Cincinnati gives confident figures. It took a while before the team received recognition of this magnitude, but Pat Noonan and the rest of the team stood strong during trying times and are now on track to win the 2023 MLS Cup should everything fall into place.

Given its position at the MLS Cup odds board, one would guess LAFC holds the league’s best record. However, the club remains four points behind the Western Conference leaders this time. They failed to create a nice cushion leading up to the playoffs. Then again, the squad has seen a few erratic moments across 23 games. They struggle to find the back of the net with only 34 goals to go with a 10-7-6 Win-Draw-Loss record. So, the defending champions must seize every opportunity over the next few months to maintain their chances of winning the MLS Cup.

Last year’s finalist, Philadelphia Union, is also primed as a top-three favorite on the odds boards. While they currently hold third place in the Eastern Conference, we know head coach Jim Curtin has enough firepower to dart them past New England–who’s currently three points ahead.

Some of the most improved sides that can make the 2023 MLS season challenging for the favorites are the Seattle Sounders and Atlanta United, and both arguments are easy to defend. The Sounders struggled last year following their tiring CONCACAF Champions League title run, and now they have an opportunity to focus on the domestic competition. Meanwhile, Atlanta United faced numerous off-field issues in 2022, but they made several roster adjustments and are looking solid ahead of the next few weeks.
