The Best Destinations for 2023 NBA Draft Prospect Scoot Henderson

By Jeff Stinger

Beyond the Victor Wembanyama hype, there’s immense talent surrounding the upcoming 2023 NBA Draft in June. The second-biggest name that can make waves in the next few weeks is 19-year-old Scoot Henderson. Since dominating the G League at a very young age, many project him to become the second overall pick.

Since the order of the draft was set in stone following Tuesday night’s Draft Lottery, San Antonio gets the No. 1 overall pick, followed by Charlotte at No. 2, Portland at No. 3, Houston at No. 4, with the top five concluded by Detroit at No. 5.

Nitrobetting is ready to dish out key assists and lob passes with betting tips and news coverage throughout the NBA. We break down the draft prospect and what he means to the sport and the upcoming roster updates.

Scoot Henderson’s trajectory to the big league

Don’t let his age fool you. Scoot is already an elite point guard. He’s far from the perfect prospect and is rough around the edges but already packs pro-level physical tools and the ability to take over games. The teenager sets himself apart from the competition thanks to rock solid and explosive athleticism.

With broad shoulders, a strong frame, and impressive above-the-rim ability, a formidable team can easily mold him into a superstar. The Georgia-born guard has all the size and quickness you want in a high-level NBA point guard. Furthermore, his long arms and ability to absorb contact make him an asset on the defensive end as well.

Creativity is a crucial trait in a point guard. Scoot has exactly that. He’s a creative finisher, who excels when he’s driving hard to the rim and scoring in the paint, and setting up mid-range looks. It’s difficult to overlook his explosive driving ability. He’s a freak athlete with a first step that can match any pro, not to mention crazy strength.

Where to, Scoot?

Portland Trail Blazers

With the Spurs off the table after becoming heavy favorites to secure Victor Wembanyama as the No. 1 pick, Scoot is likely to land in Charlotte or Portland. The latter is at a crossroads with franchise star Damian Lillard pushing 33 and Jerami Grant about to become an unrestricted free agent and a favorite acquisition among teams this summer.

Many believe that this pick could play bait if the Blazers try to strengthen the roster and compete with Lillard entering his prime years. If Portland parts ways with Lillard, the league could pause until he’s traded. However, if Portland keeps the picks, the Blazers have a shot at Scoot Henderson and build around him or play him alongside Lillard on multiple occasions.

Charlotte Hornets

Another frontrunner to snatch Henderson is the Charlotte Hornets. The franchise failed to win the 2023 NBA Draft lottery, which means they are out of the Wembanyama race. Charlotte is in a position to potentially sign the G League Ignite guard since landing the second overall pick.

The Draft Lottery narrative puts the Hornets at a crossroads. LaMelo Ball is an All-Star caliber talent, but he’s already missed significant playing time in two of his three NBA seasons. The franchise can explore the possibility of trading Ball in favor of Henderson if they play their cards right. Additionally, they could trade the No. 2 pick to a team for an instant-impact forward or center.

Another possibility is that the Hornets run a two-guard lineup that enrages teams with dribble drives. Ball is strong enough to take shots from deep with Henderson developing into a quality shooter himself. The prospective No. 2 draft is far from perfect. That said, his potential is off the charts once he joins a professional organization.

Houston Rockets

If, for some reason, the Hornets and Blazers look the other way, Houston is one of the three likely destinations of Scoot in June. Similarly, Houston offers a handful of complimentary off-ball pieces, both without the previous developmental account.

The Kevin Porter Jr. point guard is yet to establish itself in the league, and the franchise struggled to fit all of its cogs together. With Henderson as the focal piece, Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., and the rest of the lineup would finally have a primary. Similarly, Green gets help on the offensive end, Sengun benefits from a cutting and lob threat, while Smith can connect with a true passer to help him get better chances at a bucket.
