2022 PGA Sony Open in Hawaii Recap

Winner Hideki Matsuyama battled Russell Henley in a playoff after both shot a -23. Hideki won the playoff and Henley finished second.

Kevin Kisner and Seamus Power finished tied for third. Both shot a -19. Michael Thompson and Lucas Glover finished tied for fifth at -18. Three players finished tied for seventh at -17: Russell Knox, Matt Kuchar, and Adam Svensson.

2023 Sony Open in Hawaii Top Pick

The defending champion has yet to break the top 20 in five tournaments played this season. Hideki Matsuyama even had to withdrawal from the Cadence Bank Houston Open in November.

Hideki sat on the bench until last week. Not surprisingly, Matsuyama shot his best four rounds of the season at the Sentry Open, finishing a tied twenty-first after shooting 67 in two rounds.

If we assume Matsuyama used the Sentry as a prep for this, we must give him a huge shot to repeat. Hideki had a disappointing 2022 after a fantastic 2021. Matsuyama is more than capable of bouncing with a terrific 2023. The bounce back could start this week in Hawaii.

2023 Sony Open in Hawaii Second Pick

Sungjae Im lost any chance at winning the 2022 Sony Open after a 71 in the first round. Although Im bounced back in Round 2 with a 67, it wasn’t enough for him to lift the hardware.

This week, expect a mor focused Sungjae. In five tournaments played this season, including the Sentry Open last week, Im hasn’t finished worst than thirty-fourth.

Sungjae finished thirteenth at the Sentry. The Sentry Open field was much deeper than the field for this. No doubt, Sungjae Im rates as one of the top contenders to win the Sony Open.

2023 Sony Open in Hawaii Third Pick

After finishing a tied fifty-second at The CJ Cup, Jordan Spieth took some time off. He next teed off at the Hero World Challenge.

Spieth didn’t get serious about this season until last week where he finished a tied thirteenth. Jordan has stayed in Hawaii to prepare for this tournament. We should expect a great effort from Spieth. Deciding between the top three choices isn’t easy. So if you like Spieth, know you’re getting fair odds.

2023 Sony Open in Hawaiis Underdog Pick

Brian Harman shot four rounds under par at the 2022 Sony Open. But although Harman played great, he didn’t play well enough to finish better than a tied forty-eighth.

Brian, for sure, can improve upon that finish. So far this season, Harman hasn’t finished worse than twenty-third in any of the five tournaments he has played.

The top underdog choice finished a tied sixteenth at the Sentry. Before that, Harman had finished second in two straight tourneys: the RSM Classic and the Worldwide Technology. The odds make Brian Harman more than playable.
