By Jeff Stinger

The NASCAR Cup Series heads west to the annual weekend in wine country. Sonoma once featured two events in the campaign. But, with several updates to the schedule, we only get to see the road circuit once a year. Nevertheless, the California-based track remains a prestigious, technical, and anticipated track. The scenery change also mixes things up this weekend. We could see narratives that favor other drivers, which brings us to the list of the 2023 Toyota Save Mart 350 sleeper picks.

Brad Keselowski

  • 2023 Toyota Save Mart 350 Race Odds: +3,500

Hailing from Michigan, Brad Keselowski gets our attention following an impressive trajectory to the Cup Series level. He starts in 2023 as a sophomore driver. After becoming a part-owner with Roush Fenway Racing and putting together RFK Racing, Keselowski is now behind the wheel of the No. 6 Ford. He won the Bluegreen Vacations Duel in his debut race with his new team at Daytona.

Before reaching his current position, Brad used to drive the No. 2 Team Penske Ford. Before that, he won the Talladega Superspeedway in 2021, recording his sixth career win at the Alabama circuit, tying Jeff Gordon and Dale Earndhart Jr. for second winningest of all time.

The 39-year-old ranks 11th in the 2023 campaign with 403 points in 15 races. He also has six top-ten finishes and three top-fives to complete an average start of 15th and an average finish of 15.667.

Michael McDowell

  • 2023 Toyota Save Mart 350 Race Odds: +3,795

Another veteran driver graces our sleepers list for the weekend. Michael McDowell drives the No. 34 Ford for Front Row Motorsports in the NASCAR Cup Series. The 38-year-old is in his sixth season with the team, having joined Front Row before 2018. He features over 350 career starts and documented his first Cup Series victory in 2021’s season-opening Daytona 500. His best record before that was a fourth-place finish at the same track in 2017.

Experience is what makes him a threat to the grid. Although he only ranks 20th this season with 278 points, his ability to tackle a circuit sets him apart from the younger generation. In 15 races, the man from Arizona recorded a pair of top-ten finishes with an average start of 19.133 and a 20.4 average finish. He is not to be underestimated this weekend as Front Row Motorsports could put together a competent car for him to tackle the exciting right and left-hand turns of Sonoma Raceway.

Bubba Wallace

  • 2023 Toyota Save Mart 350 Race Odds: +10,000

23XI’s Bubba Wallace could put on a show this weekend. After becoming the second Black driver to win the Cup Series with his impressive performance at Talladega Superspeedway in the 2021 fall race–his first career win and first for the recently-established 23XI Racing. Among his accolades are a Kansas Speedway victory in 2022, and finishing runner-up to William Byron for Sunoco Rookie of the Year in 2018. Outside the Cup Series, Wallace also won six Craftsman Truck Series trophies.

This weekend will be tricky for drivers that struggle to race around traditional circuits. But, Bubba Wallace is not one of them. He’s been improving his circuit driving skills since joining 23XI. In 15 Cup Series appearances this year, he ranks 15th with 334 points, five top tens, four top fives, and a 17.2 average finish.
