2022 YellaWood 500 Recap

Hendrick driver Chase Elliott scored the checkered flag at last year’s YellaWood 500. Elliott had started the race sixteenth and moved his way up to first at the end of stage 2 and stage 3.

Ryan Blaney finished second followed by Michael McDowell in third. Ross Chastain and Denny Hamlin finished fourth and fifth. Sixth place went to Erik Jones.

Then rookie Todd Gililland finished seventh followed by Daniel Suarez in eighth. Austin Cindric and Chase Briscoe finished ninth and tenth.

Top Choice to Win the 2023 YellaWood 500

The AutoTrader EchoPark 400 winner should keep the good times going. William Byron has been in excellent form.

His lone non-top 10 finish came at Kansas Speedway and even in that race, William performed well, crossing the line fifteenth. Byron finished ninth at Bristol Motor Speedway in the last. The fourth place at Darlington impresses and William won at Watkins Glen.

For sure, Byron can win back-to-back. It helps that Hendrick is all in on William because Chase Elliott didn’t qualify for the playoffs.

Second Choice to Win the 2023 YellaWood 500

William Byron is in first place on the standings followed by our second choice, Denny Hamlin. The Joe Gibbs driver finished a decent fifth at the AutoTrader EchoPark last Sunday.

Before the fifth place finish, Denny had won at Bristol. Before winning at Bristol, Hamlin had finished second at Kansas Speedway. So for sure, Denny can take this.

If you believe Hamlin beats Byron in their mano-y-mano playoff rivalry, pull the trigger on Denny. He’s determined to finally lift the Cup in November. So we should expect him to put in a great effort.

Third Choice to Win the 2023 YellaWood 500

Chris Buescher is in third place on the standings. But it's just a coincidence that we pick him third to win the YellaWood 500.

Buescher performed okay last week when finishing fourteenth. At Bristol, Chris finished fourth. Beuscher took the checkered flag at Daytona and followed up that performance with a third at Darlington.

Chris didn’t drive well in this last year. But Buescher and his crew are on a different level in 2023. So although he hasn't had great success at Talladega, that could change on Sunday.

Top Underdog to Win the 2023 YellaWood 500

Michael McDowell is in good enough form to warrant a look to win the YellaWood 500. He finished fifteenth at the AutoTrader EchoPark last Sunday.

Before that finish, McDowell finished sixth at Bristol Motor Speedway. In this last year, McDowell finished third.

Considering McDowell’s form as well as his recent finishes, the odds make Michael an overlay. He shouldn’t offer +2800 to win. So if you’re looking to back a dog, going with McDowell could be a wise move.
