2024 Kentucky Derby Trifecta Play
- First: Fierceness
- Second Slot: Sierra Leone, Forever Young, Just a Touch
- Third Slot: Sierra Leone, Forever Young, Just a Touch, Honor Marie, Resilience, Just Steel, Catching Freedom
This year’s Kentucky Derby trifecta revolves around the best horse in the race. Consider playing three trifectas with Fierceness in the first position, keyed in the second position, and keyed in the third.
So if you play a trifecta like mentioned above, the second slot horses will be in the win slot with Fierceness in the second slot. Then the second slot horses will be in the second slot with Fierceness in the third slot and the third slot horses on top.
Play your trifecta this way if you don’t believe Fierceness blows away his opponents. It gives good coverage and if an underdog like Resilience hits, the payout will be tremendous.

This superfecta gives excellent coverage while placing logical horses in the second and fourth slots. The key is for Fierceness to win.
If the Pletcher horse does take the Derby the chances of scoring a massive superfecta is aided by going All in the third slot. All includes horses like Resilience, which have an excellent shot of finishing third.
Catching Freedom, Just a Touch, and Sierra Leone are top four runners. Make sure you have them in the fourth slot. Especially put Catching Freedom in the fourth slot because that one may not have enough real estate to cross the line third.

- Key Horse: Fierceness
- Use in the Exacta: Sierra Leone, Forever Young, Just a Touch, Catching Freedom
Fierceness if the fastest horse in the race. Based on Beyer Figures, which hold up nicely when handicapping the Derby, Fierceness is about 10 to 20 points faster than his competition.
So even if Fierceness doesn’t get an easy lead, it’s doubtful his competition sticks with him early. Then it’s doubtful horses like Sierra Leone or Catching Freedom catch the Pletcher monster. Just a Touch and Forever Young could hang on for second if Fierceness gets to run a soft pace. Use all four underneath the Pletcher. Reverse if you’re iffy on Fierceness’s chances of going gate to wire.
