Mystik Dan held off Sierra Leone and Forever Young to win the Kentucky Derby, but before backing Dan to get it done in the Preakness, it’s worth noting that the speed rating wasn’t spectacular. In fact, Dan didn’t run faster than either Catching Freedom or Tuscan Gold in the Louisiana Derby or Muth in the Arkansas Derby.
Muth beat Mystik Dan to win the Arkansas Derby. Not only that, but while Dan struggled home and ran his heart out to hold off Sierra Leone and Forever Young, Muth was relaxing in a field, prancing around and getting stronger. Muth is the pick of the Derby winner.

If Imagination can get a second gear, he’d the best of his generation. In 6 races, the Baffert trainee has won 2 and finished second 4 times. For some reason, Imagination seems to relax the closer he gets to the wire, which is a shame because he’s got a ton of talent.
Catching Freedom won the Louisiana Derby after closing from the clouds. His closing kick in the Derby was there. The problem for Catching Freedom is that he had to get through a wall of horses before unleashing it. By the time he started rolling, the race was over.
Tuscan Gold should be bigger and better than he was in the Louisiana Derby. Gold failed to switch leads on time in the Louisiana Derby, which may explain why he finished third. Also, Catching Freedom and Honor Marie were to his outside where he didn’t see them clearly. Gold finished ahead of the horse he targeted while going 4-wide around both turns. Chad Brown may have another Preakness winner in his shed row.
