Why Bet on the Philadelphia 76ers?

It’s most definitely not a coincidence that the Sixers are 0-2 in this series playing without NBA scoring champion Joel Embiid and 2-0 with him. In Sunday’s 116-108 home win, Embiid had a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds, adding two assists. Embiid was hot from the jump in this one, as he dropped in 15 points with just one miss through the first quarter of play, and he ended his evening on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and 9-of-13 at the free-throw line.

Embiid could play quite angry on Tuesday because he learned Monday that he lost out to Denver center Nikola Jokic for regular-season MVP honors. Jokic and the Nuggets were easily dispatched in Round 1 of the playoffs by Golden State, but that’s why MVP is a regular-season award. Overseas players have now won the MVP award for the past four seasons, with Jokic’s back-to-back awards following Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s honors in 2019 and 2020.

Meanwhile, James Harden looks like a completely different player than he did in the first two games. Harden was Philadelphia’s best player on Sunday with 31 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. He made nearly as many 3-pointers (six) as the Heat did as a team (seven). He was certainly more aggressive as an attacker, and his 10 free throw attempts were the second-most he’s earned this postseason.

Harden took just 18 shots in Game 4, but it was plenty because he scored or assisted on 54 of the 98 points (55%) the Sixers scored while he was on the court.

“He sees so many defensive coverages out there,” Philly’s Tobias Harris said of Harden. “A lot of times they zone up the court as well, so sometimes it’s tough for him to be extremely aggressive on the offensive end. But when he’s in a groove like [Sunday night], we just get him the ball and keep it going.”

Tyrese Maxey dropped 18 points in the win, the second straight for the 76ers. All five Philadelphia starters scored in double figures, while the team shot 53.7% from the field.

Why Bet on the Miami Heat?

Jimmy Butler went off for 40 points in Sunday’s Game 4 loss. Butler could not be stopped as he finished 13-of-20 from the floor and 12-of-13 at the stripe, but aside from Bam Adebayo, he didn’t get much help from the rest of Miami’s starters. Adebayo bounced back from a disappointing Game 3 performance with 21 points and seven rebounds.

Starting point guard Kyle Lowry reportedly re-injured his hamstring Sunday and he is considered questionable for Game 5. Lowry has struggled through two games since returning to the floor for Game 3 of this best-of-7 series. He has scored a total of six points on 3-of-14 shooting (0-of-8 3-pointers) in 55 minutes in two games.

“Put it this way, you don’t want to play with it,” Lowry admitted after Sunday’s game. “We’ll see,” Lowry said. “… Tough timing for a hamstring. I’ve never had a soft tissue [injury]. This goal is to be out there. So if you’re asking if I’m gonna try and play, yes, I’ll be trying to play Game 5.”

Gabe Vincent has been a quality backup but only had two points Sunday. He would start if Lowry can’t go. Might we finally see Duncan Robinson play? He has been glued to the bench in this series, which is strange because the Heat are really struggling to shoot from deep and that’s what he does best.

During the 2021-22 regular season, Robinson played 25.9 minutes per game and averaged 10.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest while shooting 39.9 percent from the field and 37.2 percent from 3-point range.

“I’m on the court, my job is to play basketball to the best of my abilities, help us win,” he said. “If I’m not on the court, help us win. If that’s being a supportive teammate, that’s what I do.”
