Acquiring Fundamentals With Bojan Bogdanovic

By Jeff Stinger

Bojan Bogdanovic’s stock value skyrocketed in the last few years. This means the Detroit Pistons won’t have trouble drawing interest if they want to consider trading the Croatian player. His trajectory to the Pistons came as a surprise. Bogdanovic’s move from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference happened in September as the Utah Jazz split their best assets ahead of a rebuild. Detroit happily signed the six-foot-seven forward to a two-year $39-million deal.

Some of the teams that showed interest include the Dallas Mavericks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Phoenix Suns, and of course, the Los Angeles Lakers. This is a good time for the Pistons to cash in on Bogdanovic’s trade value. In 40 games, the Morstar-born player averaged 21.1 points and 2.7 assists per game and continues to log impressive numbers from the field at 53.3% from two and 42.2% from deep.

Before anything else, Nitrobetting shares the latest news, NBA odds, and special features throughout the 2022-23 NBA season. Let’s get a closer look at one of the hottest NBA trade rumors before the season ends.

Back to Playoff Contention for Bojan?

Dallas Mavericks in the mix

The Dallas Mavericks have their eye on Bojan. The Mavs are a few wins away from the top of the Western Conference thanks to a scorching Luka Doncic. Recent trade acquisition Christian Wood also emerged as the lineup’s starting center with the potential to stretch his contract with the franchise, as his chemistry with Doncic and quality rim protection swiftly improved.

Even though winning streaks look good on their portfolio, there’s always room for improvement. Adding another veteran to the list while having an additional scoring threat to play alongside Doncic is too good to pass up. With links to Dallas as a potential trade target for months, many think that the European can create a solid duo with their franchise player.

For the Mavs’ management, this means pulling off a trying deal and one that makes the most sense. As it stands, having trade-eligible first-round picks is non-negotiable. Sending one first-rounder for Bogdanovic, who recently penned a two-year extension since arriving in Detroit, sounds like a fair deal. However, if a second first-rounder is demanded from the Pistons camp, that’s where the deal could go south.

The right price could land this deal and is likely to make the Mavs’ race to the top less burdened. Their current roster doesn’t seem to be consistent enough to contend in the long term considering the soaring minutes that go with Doncic. Ultimately, Dallas should jump at the chance of landing Bogdanovic before the February deadline.

Are the Cavs a prime trade candidate?

Several rumors link Bogdanovic to the Cavs. Since the franchise is hunting for a player that can knock down more threes and contribute on defense, the European player is a prime candidate now. The forward is riding his career-best numbers and he is not afraid to take shots with an average of 14.3 shots per game.

Many think that Bojan is a good fit with the Cavs. But the real question lies beneath the franchise’s salary cap situation. Bogdanovic is on a $19-million annual deal through 2024-25 which makes for more complicated finances on Cleveland’s end. The 2016 NBA champions also have limited draft capital after pulling off the Donovan Mitchell deal.

This would require Cleveland to bring in Isaac Okoro, Caris LeVert, or Cedi Osman as trade pieces. Another impending problem involves their competitors. A few more teams are looking to get involved, which makes the situation more complex.

The trade deadline is only a month away so if the Cavs do want to pull the trigger on this deal to amp up their roster this season, management needs to stay active in the market to snatch up Bogdanovic and improve their playoff odds in April.
