Carolina Panthers 2023 Straight-Up Overview

The Carolina Panthers traded a pair of first round picks, a pair of second round picks, and DJ Moore to choose Bryce Young first overall at the 2023 NFL Draft. The former Alabama quarterback has all the makings of a surefire All-Pro.

He’s got a knack for understanding where to place the ball. And although he doesn’t have NFL size, name a coach or GM in the history of the league who doesn’t think NFL size is overrated after seeing what Drew Brees accomplished?

Playing QB is much more than just having the strongest arm in the game. Young’s arm is plenty good enough and the Panthers have surrounded their franchise QB with talent.

WR Adam Thielen and TE Hayden Hurst are two of the best in the league. The offensive line ranks sixteenth by most analysts, putting it in the top half of the NFL. Running back Miles Sanders is one of the most underrated in the league. Sanders led the Eagles’ backfield last season.

Young doesn’t have Jalen Hurts type rushing ability or speed, but he’s cagey. Bryce has a feel for the pocket and when he must run, he will.

When it comes to the defensive side of the ball, the Panthers are decent. Carolina ranked twenty- second in yards allowed and nineteenth in points allowed per game. The offense ranked twenty-ninth in yards allowed each contest.

The coaching staff is solid. Frank Reich was the Panthers first ever quarterback, signing for Carolina’s inaugural season in 1995. Reich is a legend in Buffalo where he led the Bills to a 32-point come from behind victory over the then Houston Oilers in a 1993 wild card playoff game.

Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown learned his craft at Georgia, Wisconsin, Miami, South Carolina, and from Sean McVay, the Los Angeles Rams head coach.

The Carolina Panthers can surprise. Most don’t believe the team has what it takes to beat the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South. But if Young comes up to speed quickly, Carolina will push for a playoff spot.

Let’s say the Panthers improve from 7-10 to 9-8.

Carolina has a chance to be this season’s surprise against the spread team. Every season, there’s at least 1.

In 2021, the Dallas Cowboys went 13-4 against the spread. Last season, the Giants were the team that went 13-4.

Carolina could lose 8 games, but go 13-4 against the spread this season. Oddsmakers and handicappers will question whether Young is ready to lead the offense. All signs say that he is, but until the rookie proves it, we won’t know.

So the Panthers could face favorable lines. We’re calling it. Carolina goes 13-4 ATS.

Predicting over under total records for teams is one of the most difficult handicapping exercises. Doing so requires knowing what oddsmakers know and that’s hard.

Last season, the Panthers went 8-9 over under. This season, that could change because not only has Carolina gone through massive changes, but so have the Panthers division rivals: the Saints, the Falcons, and the Buccaneers.

But let’s err on the side of caution. Instead of 8-9, let’s go 9-8. Oddsmakers are more adept at setting fair, close to even, over under totals than any other lines.
