Clemson vs. North Carolina NCAAB Odds and Preview – February 6th, 2024

One of the most lopsided rivalries among power conference teams in college basketball is Clemson at North Carolina as the Tigers have just a single win in history at Chapel Hill. They probably won’t win Tuesday, either, with the No. 3 Tar Heels as solid favorites.

Why Bet on the Clemson Tigers?

Clemson (14-7, 4-6 ACC) is not an NCAA Tournament as things stand and a win Tuesday would be huge for the Tigers’ resume – although probably not enough on its own for an at-large bid. Clemson comes off a crushing 66-65 home loss to Virginia on Saturday. Clemson trimmed a 12-point deficit to just two points at 56-54 when PJ Hall made his first 3-pointer of the game to go up 57-56. Then with Virginia leading 60-59, a back-breaking four-point play from Isaac McNeely put the Cavaliers up five with 2:11 left.

The Tigers got it back to within a point after three made free throws from Hall. With 7.2 seconds left, Dante Harris missed the first of his one-and-one free throws and Chase Hunter ended up with the ball after a Jack Clark rebound. Hunter pushed the ball up the floor and found Clark with an open three that would draw the back of the iron as time expired. The Tigers are 0-3 in one-possession games in ACC play this season.

“We’ve lost three games – one in double overtime and two in the last second,” coach Brad Brownell said. “The emotional drain, I’ve talked about it, is real.”

Hall led the team with 19 points, including 17 in the second half. He recently became only the fifth player in school history to amass 1,400 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocks in a career and was named among the Top 10 candidates for the 2024 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, which recognizes the top center in the nation.

Hall is second in the ACC in scoring with 19.9 points per game, while ranking 11th in rebounding (7.1 per game). He is shooting at a very high clip this season, fifth in the league (50.9 percent). Defensively, Hall is second in the ACC and is 40th nationally in blocks per game (1.90) and has 38 blocked shots this season. He is one of just three players in the country averaging at least 19.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 blocks per game this year (Zach Edey, Purdue; Drew Pember, UNC Asheville).

Ian Schieffelin Is the ACC’s Most Improved Player this season and of 12 players in America averaging at least 9.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game – the only player in the ACC. Dating back to 1992-93, he would be only the sixth player in ACC history to accomplish this stat line –joining Tim Duncan (Wake Forest – 1994-97), Luke Maye (North Carolina – 2017-19), Devin Thomas (Wake Forest – 2015-16), Travis Watson (Virginia – 2002-03) and Ryan Luther (Pittsburgh – 2017-18).

Clemson is 23-136 all-time against North Carolina, including 1-60 in games played in Chapel Hill. The Tigers’ lone win there came on Jan. 11, 2020 by a 79-76 score in overtime. They have lost three straight in the series overall, but we think they cover here, with UNC perhaps in a trap game off the Duke win.

Why Bet on the North Carolina Tar Heels?

North Carolina (18-4, 10-1 ACC) beat No. 7 Duke 93-84 on Saturday and leads the ACC by two games over second-place Virginia. Armando Bacot had 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, becoming the first Tar Heel to compile those numbers against Duke since Hall-of-Famer Charlie Scott in 1970. The 25 points tied his season high set in the season opener against Radford. Bacot has scored in double figures in all 10 of his career games against Duke with four consecutive double-doubles.

Bacot played in his 154th career game, second most in UNC history behind Leaky Black’s 155. He had scored in single digits in three straight, but Coach Hubert Davis pushed him to be more aggressive Saturday against Duke star Kyle Filipowski.

“When [Armando] is dominant down low in the post like that, it just opens everything up for us,” Davis said. “It gives us space to drive and penetrate and get to the basket. It gets us open shots on the perimeter. It gets us closer to the penalty.”

Ingram had 21 points, his scoring high as a Tar Heel. He also had 13 rebounds for his eighth double-figure rebounding day in the last 10 games and his seventh double-double of the season. He sunk a career-high five three-pointers in nine tries and tied his career high with four steals. RJ Davis chipped in 17 points and five assists without a turnover, hitting 2 of 3 three-pointers for his 19th consecutive game with multiple three-pointers to extend his own school record.

Carolina shot 50.0 percent from the floor. UNC is 19-0 under Davis when it shoots at least 50 percent, and it’s won 27 consecutive games when shooting 50 percent or better. Saturday was Carolina’s first top-10 matchup overall since a Dec. 2019 loss at Virginia. Carolina has led by 10 or more points in all 11 ACC games this season.

North Carolina is undefeated at home (10-0) and has won 11 of its last 12 games. Clemson faced UNC on Jan. 6, with the Tar Heels winning 65-55 at Littlejohn Coliseum. Davis had 14 points while Bacot had 14 points and 16 rebounds for UNC. Chase Hunter had 17 points to lead the Tigers. Schieffelin added 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Tigers made just one of their 18 3-pointers.
