Cristiano Ronaldo may have just one final shot at World Cup glory. The same goes for his rival Lionel Messi. November’s biggest international tournament features the perfect backdrop for a host of names to bid goodbye to the FIFA World Cup.

But as the curtains close on some of the greatest players the 00’s generation has seen, it’s only fitting that we pay our respects to one of the best to play the game. That said, check out Nitrobetting’s 2022 FIFA World Cup Player Spotlight: Cristiano Ronaldo down below.

2022 FIFA World Cup Player Spotlight: Cristiano Ronaldo

A mecca of fitness

Cristiano Ronaldo insisted that he will remain in the sport as long as he feels he stays in shape. If anyone could intensify a World Cup at age 41, Ronald is your man. However, he still has the 2022 edition to think about. Before making his international debut for his home country in 2004, Portugal only qualified for six major tournaments. With him behind the wheel, A Seleção now has ten in the bag, including five World Cups and five European Championships.

The 37-year-old continues to defy the odds and his doubters. He ages like fine wine and carries on being a scoring machine. So far, the Portuguese scored 117 goals in 189 international matches and is a +1,000 favorite to win the top goalscorer award.

Superior club records, inferior World Cup script

Although he found his first major international achievement after winning EURO 2016 with Portugal, Ronaldo endured an underwhelming World Cup career. The man from Madeira scored at every World Cup he appeared in and scored four of his seven World Cup goals in the 2018 edition where they can only manage a Round of 16 finish.

The closest Ronaldo has come to the World Cup trophy was his first appearance in the tournament in 2006. He helped Portugal reach the semi-finals in Germany but eventually lost to runners-up France. Since then, Portugal failed to deliver significant results. He hopes for better results in Qatar after reaching the finals thanks to playoff wins against Turkey and North Macedonia.

A soccer icon

Other than keeping himself tremendously fit at his age, there’s still a level of management to make sure his body keeps up with the pace. He will enter the stage as a 37-year-old playing against aspiring young players and even teenagers already working at intense standards. Nevertheless, the forward remains a national team icon and his country’s top goalscorer.

This 2022 FIFA World Cup Player Spotlight: Cristiano Ronaldo is not without his Ballon d’Or achievements. He is the most nominated player with 18 nominations to his name and the five-time winner of the award. With a star-studded cast by his side, we expect Portugal to get past Group H with Ghana, Uruguay, and South Korea. Portugal enters the race as +500 favorites to reach the final.
