Eagles vs. Patriots 2023 NFL Week 1 Odds, Preview & Pick

By Jeff Stinger

Everybody remembers Super Bowl LII whenever the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots rarely meet in an interconference battle during the regular season. A lot has changed since that championship game in 2017, with the Eagles having found themselves back in contention for the Lombardi just last season and with the Patriots still trying to get their groove back in their post-dynasty era.

Why Bet on the Philadelphia Eagles?

The NFC East and the entire NFC at that goes through the Philadelphia Eagles once more. Philly set a new franchise record with a 14-win campaign in 2022 and came up just one win short of winning the Super Bowl for the second time in less than a decade. Expectations are through the roof once more in Year 3 under the pairing of quarterback Jalen Hurts and Nick Sirianni.

Hurts was in contention for the MVP award all season long, finishing with over 3,700 passing yards and 35 offensive touchdowns; 13 of them being rushing TDs. The arrival of new top wideout A.J. Smith has been a boon for the Eagles, as well as the continued development of fellow wideout and former Heisman winner DeVonta Smith to make up a potent Eagles offense that ranked third in yards and points per game.

Philadelphia also had one of the best defenses in the league, but that side of the ball saw a major overhaul after other teams had pillaged some of their best parts this past offseason, including a new defensive coordinator in Sean Desai. Nonetheless, the Eagles still feel like an organization built to be a title contender for the foreseeable future with the terrific roster balance and sound upper management decision-making.

Why Bet on the New England Patriots?

With a subpar 8-9 record last season, the New England Patriots regressed yet again and missed the playoffs for the second time in three years. Could this signal the end of the Bill Belichick regime in New England? The Patriots didn’t make the biggest of splashes this offseason either, which doesn’t bode well for their odds of snapping out of their mediocre state in 2023.

Third-year quarterback Mac Jones took a step back in his sophomore campaign, finishing last season with just 2,997 passing yards and 14 TDs with 11 picks thrown. And while running back Rhamondre Stevenson emerged as a 1,000-yard rushing force, the Patriots had a bottom-10 offense in the league when everything was accounted for.

On the bright side, the Pats still had a top-10-worthy defense and was one of just six teams in the league last season to allow fewer than 21 points to their opponents per contest. They’re hoping that the addition of wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster will revitalize their passing game, while also keeping the defense up to par despite the loss of three-time All-Pro safety Devin McCourty.

Eagles vs. Patriots Betting Trends

  • The Eagles went 7-1 at home last season, albeit just 2-6 against the spread.
  • Philadelphia is also 7-1 in the last eight regular-season games against teams from the AFC (5-3 ATS).
  • The totals went over in six of Phlly’s last seven contests versus opponents from the AFC.
  • The Patriots went an even 4-4 at home in the 2022 campaign (3-5 ATS).
  • New England went 2-3 against NFC teams last season (2-3 ATS).
  • The totals went under in four of the last five games played in Foxborough.

Eagles vs. Patriots Expert Betting Predictions

Philadelphia and New England have had memorable battles in the recent past, yet we don’t expect that to be the case in this particular season opener. The Eagles are far and away the more talented team in this matchup, and not even the Patriots’ home-field advantage will be enough to keep the reigning NFC champs from winning as road favorites with a double-digit margin at that.
