Giants vs Commanders 2022 NFL Week 15 Odds, Preview & Pick

By Hank Blaine

Huge game in the NFC playoff race on Sunday night in Week 15 and an all-NFC East matchup as the sliding New York Giants visit the surging Washington Commanders.

This wasn’t originally the Sunday night game in Week 15 but was flexed into that window, bumping Patriots-Raiders to the afternoon.

In an usual twist, Washington will face the Giants for the second game in a row. In Week 13, the teams tied 20-20 in New Jersey and then the Commanders were off in Week 14. Neither team had a realistic chance to score in the 10-minute overtime in the first meeting. Giants rookie linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux had a blindside sack on Taylor Heinicke at the Commanders’ 1-yard line in OT, but all it did was help set up it a long-shot 58-yard field goal attempt by Graham Gano as time expired.

Gano had hit earlier from 48 and 27 yards in the opposite direction. Heinicke threw two touchdown passes for Washington and hit a crucial fourth-down pass on a tying 90-yard touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter.

Why Bet on the New York Giants?

New York (7-5-1) is winless in its past four after getting crushed 48-22 at home vs. Philadelphia this past Sunday. Daniel Jones completed 18-of-27 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown, adding four carries for an additional 26 yards and a touchdown. Jones’ lone touchdown pass came after the Giants blocked a punt that gave them the ball deep in Eagles’ territory.

Star running back Saquon Barkley was questionable but played and rushed nine times for 28 yards, Eagles, adding two receptions for an additional 20 yards. Barkley played only 20 snaps with a neck injury and the blowout nature of the game both being factors in his unusually limited role (11 touches for 48 yards on a 31 percent snap share). Prior to that, he handled at least 42 snaps and 15 touches in each of the Giants’ other 12 games. He will play this week.

The fifth year running back leads the Giants in both rushing yards (1,083) and receptions (42). His rushing yardage total is the NFL’s fourth highest. Barkley is sixth in the NFL with 1,344 scrimmage yards. But Barkley is anything but pleased with his recent performance. In the first nine games, Barkley averaged 103.4 yards and exceeded the century mark four times. The Giants were 7-2 in those games. Over the last four games, Barkley posted rushing yardage totals of 22, 39, 63 and 28 yards while the Giants went 0-3-1.

Cornerback Adoree Jackson was a non-participant in the Giants’ practice Thursday. Jackson has been sidelined for the past three games since suffering an MCL sprain Week 11 versus Detroit and will miss another game. Receiver James (concussion) was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice.

He’ll have one more chance to upgrade to full activity in practice Friday, but even if he does, James will still require clearance from an independent neurologist in order to play Sunday in Washington. If James isn’t cleared to play Week 15, Kenny Golladay could see added opportunities alongside starting receivers Darius Slayton and Isaiah Hodgins.

Why Bet on the Washington Commanders?

Commanders defensive end and former NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young has yet to suit up in 2022 despite being activated from injured reserve before Week 12 but is likely to debut this week. The 23-year-old returned to practice on Nov. 2 and was moved to the active roster nearly three weeks later, but has been inactive in each matchup since while he continues to rehab his knee. Young has been out since last November after tearing his ACL. The defensive end had 24 pressures in the nine games before his injury.

The Commanders, who have climbed from the depths of a 1-4 start to currently holding the sixth seed in the playoffs with 6-1-1 record since October, have a 73% shot of making the postseason through the remaining four games. A win brings it up to 90%, while a loss essentially chops it in half.

Washington is one of the younger teams in the NFL — were 14th with an average age of 25.8 heading into the 2022 season — but the Commanders have played their fair share of primetime games since Ron Rivera took over in 2020. Washington is 5-2 in that span, including two wins this season against the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles.
