Lions vs. Packers 2022 NFL Week 18 Odds, Preview & Pick

By Hank Blaine

The final Sunday night game of the NFL regular season is a big one in the NFC playoff race as the Detroit Lions visit the Green Bay Packers in what could be a winner-take-all matchup for the conference’s final wild-card spot. Green Bay is in with a win but Detroit needs help.

If Green Bay wins this game, it will be the NFC’s final wild-card team. It’s as simple as that. If the Packers lose, they miss the playoffs and maybe it’s the final game with the team for Aaron Rodgers. Detroit will be watching an earlier game between the Rams and Seahawks in Seattle as the Lions can only earn the wild-card spot if the Seahawks are upset there and then Detroit wins this game. Coach Dan Campbell says his guys will be all out even if no playoff spot is on the line.

“Either we’re playing to get in or we’re playing to be spoiler, and that’s it,” Campbell said. “So either way, we win. I know we’ll put up a hell of a fight, one way or another.”

Why Bet on the Detroit Lions?

Detroit also won easily in Week 17, 41-10 over Chicago. Jared Goff completed 21-of-29 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns. He could have posted better numbers, but the Lions spent most of the second half running the ball and killing the clock. Jamaal Williams rushed 22 times for 144 yards and a touchdown. The yardage was a career high and he had only carried the ball more than 22 times in a single game once in his six-year tenure as a pro.

Detroit could complete a rare season sweep as it upset the visiting Packers 15-3 in Week 9. Rodgers threw three interceptions for the first time in five years, all of them in the end zone or at the goal line, taking away scoring opportunities. Then the Packers got one last chance in the final minute, getting into the red zone, but four straight incomplete passes gave Detroit the win. Rodgers was 23-of-43 for 291 yards with one TD, three INTs and a 53.5 passer rating. The Packers also lost several players to injuries during the game, including CB Eric Stokes, WRs Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, RB Aaron Jones, LB Rashan Gary, and others.

Lions safety Kerby Joseph had the game of his career and was a big reason the Lions emerged victorious. He snagged two interceptions and a critical pass breakup that saved a touchdown.

Why Bet on the Green Bay Packers?

At one point, the Packers were 4-8, but a late-season surge has put them in playoff position, despite the odds being stacked against them for most of the season. They are currently on a four-game win streak following a 41-17 home rout of Minnesota in Week 17. Rodgers completed 15-of-24 attempts for 159 yards and a touchdown, adding one rush for two yards and a touchdown. Rodgers didn’t have to do much in a game dominated by the inspired Green Bay defense facing off against a banged-up Minnesota offensive line. Aaron Jones had 14 rushes for 111 yards. AJ Dillon carried the ball 12 times for 41 yards and a touchdown – his fifth straight game with a TD.

Rodgers has had exactly one touchdown pass in each of the Packers’ four games in this winning streak. It’s the first time in Rodgers’ career that the Packers have won four straight with him throwing for one or fewer touchdowns in each.

The Packers were in a different place when they faced the Lions the first time this season, having lost four in a row, a streak Detroit pushed to five.

Including a 1994 playoff victory, the Packers are 28-3 against the Lions in the state of Wisconsin since 1992. Green Bay scored 42 points in the meeting at Lambeau in 2020, the most it had scored at home against the Lions since posting 45 in 2011. The Packers followed it up with scoring 35 in an 18-point victory last season at home.

It is the third time in the last four seasons that the Packers and Lions will meet in a prime-time contest (all three at Lambeau). The Packers are closing out the regular season at home for the first time since 2018 when they faced the Lions.

Lions vs. Packers Expert Betting Predictions

Most NFL fans would be quick to presume that this will be another case of the Lions cracking under pressure in a pivotal game against the Packers. However, Detroit has won back-to-back meetings against Green Bay and is just as motivated to make the postseason as their rival. Nevertheless, the Packers’ home-field advantage may just be the X-factor that will decide the Lions’ fate for the worse. After all, the Lions have only won three games in Lambeau dating back to the early 1990s.
