Minnesota Vikings 2023 NFL Season Betting Guide

By Hank Blaine

Last season, the Minnesota Vikings were one of the most impressive teams in the NFC. Many expected Minnesota to have a great offense, but the Vikings won 13 games. A disappointing playoff loss in the wild card round brought the Vikings and their fans back to earth. In 2023, will Minnesota improve off the positive 2022? Or will head coach Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings take a backward step?

Minnesota Vikings 2023 Straight-Up Overview

Most expect the Kirk Cousins to Justin Jefferson connection to explode this season. In 2022, Jefferson caught 128 passes for 1,809 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Jefferson is the favorite to win NFL Offensive Player of the year. So most believe JJ and Kirk make magic in 2023. Although it should happen, there’s a wrench that could end up in the machinery.

The Vikings may play without running back Dalvin Cook, who was an integral part of their offense, and Minnesota will play without WR Adam Thielen, who was one of the most important players on their roster.

Thielen caught 70 passes. O’Connell feels rookie Jordan Addison can make up for Thielen’s production. But if Addison, who was working through a nagging injury at the time of this writing, doesn’t produce, or can’t step onto the field and be consistent, teams will double Jefferson.

Also, Cook was one of the better pass-catching running backs in the league. Alexander Mattison, Minnesota’s new RB1, had 74 carries for 283 yards and a 3.8 per carry average. Mattison caught just 15 passes last season.

If Mattison and Addison don’t blossom into legit starters, things could go south for Cousins and Jefferson, which would be bad for the entire Vikings team.

Minnesota has defensive issues. Marcus Davenport, who the Vikings signed away from the Saints, had 16 solo tackles and .5 sacks in 2022. Davenport has never played a full season without injury.

If Davenport gets hurt, a good possibility, the entire D might be worse than it was last season, which is saying a lot. The defense ranked thirty-first in total yards allowed and thirty-first in pass yards allowed per game. The defense gave up over 25 points each contest.

Expectation are high in Minnesota. They shouldn’t be. The defense could be worse, which doesn’t seem possible, but is, and the offense definitely could struggle. Also, the out of division schedule is brutal with road games versus the Eagles, Broncos, Raiders, and Bengals, and home games against the 49ers, Chiefs, Chargers and Saints.

O’Connell is too good of a coach for the Vikings to implode. But Minnesota only wins 7 this season and struggles to make the playoffs.

Minnesota Vikings 2023 SU Record Prediction: 7-10

Minnesota Vikings 2023 Against the Spread Overview

The Vikings went 7-9-1 against the spread last season. The word is out that in 2023 Minnesota shouldn’t be close to the team they were in 2022.

But since oddsmakers know this, we shouldn’t expect Minnesota to be much different this season from last. The Vikings again have a losing ATS record. However, it’s 8-9 instead of 7-9-1.

Minnesota Vikings ATS Record Prediction: 8-9

Minnesota Vikings 2023 Over/Under Overview

The total on Minnesota games last season was 11-6. This season, Minnesota’s total could be similar.

More likely, oddsmakers adjust. Think a return to the mean. A 9-8 over to under total makes sense.

Minnesota Vikings 2023 Over/Under Record Prediction: 9-8
