Nets vs. 76ers 2023 NBA Playoffs Odds and Game 1 Preview – April 15th

By Jeff Stinger

The Brooklyn Nets had high hopes of making a deep run in the 2023 NBA Playoffs. But after a deluge of franchise-altering trades for the worse, they merely made the postseason as the No. 6 seed. That pits the Nets against the third-seeded Philadelphia 76ers, who are having another terrific run with a banner campaign from Joel Embiid. Will Brooklyn’s rag-tag bunch be able to pull off an upset in Game 1 Saturday against Philly?

Why Bet on the Brooklyn Nets?

Over the last 28 games of the regular season after the trade deadline, the Brooklyn Nets no longer had their top two stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving on the roster. They went 13-15 during this stretch, which is commendable enough for them to avoid the East’s Play-In Tournament and secure the No. 6 seed in the conference.

Mikal Bridges, whom Brooklyn received as part of the Durant deal with Phoenix, emerged as the Nets’ go-to guy. The only player to play in all regular-season games averaged over 27 points per game in his short stint in Brooklyn and will be called upon to deliver the team its first playoff series win in three years.

Returning point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, the other huge piece the Nets got on their other deal to ship Irving to Dallas, has also played a huge role in boosting the team’s offensive efficiency. Brooklyn’s three-point shooting actually improved to 43.7 percent (fifth best in the NBA) after dealing KD and Kyrie, with Bridges and Dinwiddie’s respective shooting strokes being huge positive factors in the Nets’ improvement from long distance.

Why Bet on the Philadelphia 76ers?

The Philadelphia 76ers have a lot of history with the Nets of late, with the infamous trade of James Harden to Philadelphia being one of the more memorable game-changing deals in recent memory.

With Harden’s arrival, the 76ers’ homegrown superstar Joel Embiid had one of his best NBA seasons thus far and is a front-runner to win the regular-season MVP award. Embiid is averaging gaudy double-double averages of 33.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game whilst shooting 54.8 percent from the floor. Although Harden took a small step back from his scoring load, his 224 assists dished out to Embiid are the most in the league by any pairing of players.

Simply put, the Sixers have built a well-rounded squad, one that ranks in the top eight in both offensive and defensive efficiency. It also doesn’t hurt that Philly swept Brooklyn in their season series, 4-0, with half of those wins coming after the trade deadline.

Nets vs. 76ers Betting Trends

  • The Nets won five of its last seven games entering the playoffs (3-4 ATS).
  • Brooklyn is 6-3 in the last nine road games (7-2 ATS).
  • The totals went under in four of Brooklyn’s last six outings.
  • The 76ers went 3-1 against the spread in their four wins over the Nets this season.
  • Philadelphia is 10-2 in the last 12 games as favorites to win (7-5 ATS).
  • The totals went over in each of Philadelphia’s last three home games.

Nets vs. 76ers Game 1 Expert Betting Predictions

To be brutally frank, the series opener will likely go to the Sixers. Although, we do foresee the Nets hanging in there with the Sixers with virtually nothing to lose. The Nets might not have enough in their arsenal to cover the relatively large spread (they currently have the longest odds to win among all first-round matchups on Saturday), but we’re also confident that they’ll avoid a double-digit blowout in Game 1.
