Why Bet on the Ohio State Buckeyes?

All good things had to come to an end sometime, and for the No. 11 Wisconsin Badgers, that time came during their 86-74 defeat to the No. 14 Michigan State Spartans last Friday. That loss snapped Wisconsin’s seven-game win streak but the team remains in the thick of the race for the top spot in the Big Ten standings.

Sophomore guard Johnny Davis, who ranks fifth in Division I basketball averaging 22.2 points per game, was in his element against MSU by going 8-for-20 with a team-high 25 points. But outside of Davis and fellow backcourt standout Brad Davison (22 points, six three-pointers made), Wisconsin did not have another scoring threat to back up its top two performers versus the Spartans.

What’s quite a concern as well is that the Badgers allowed Michigan State to shoot 52.7 percent from the field and 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. On the bright side, it’s only the second time this entire season that they’ve surrendered over 80 points to an opponent, with the other instance still netting the Badgers an 89-85 win over Illinois State.

Despite missing three of their starters, the Minnesota Golden Gophers pulled off a shocking 68-65 upset over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday. That win snapped Minnesota’s four-game losing streak just when things started to look as dire as ever given the team’s health concerns.

Senior guard Payton Willis played all 40 minutes of the contest and logged a team-high 32 points, including going 8-for-13 from beyond the arc and with his eight three-pointers made in a single game tying the school record. Each of Minnesota’s starters played no less than 37 minutes during the win, and the team may have to do just that again with EJ Stephens, Eric Curry, and top-scorer Jamison Battle either dealing with an injury or under the COVID-19 protocol.

Willis’ amazing performance gives hope to the Gophers, who’ve been quite the thorn on the Buckeyes’ side over recent years. Minnesota has won three of its last four meetings against Ohio State and a momentous win goes a long way towards keeping rookie head coach Ben Johnson and the boys from the Twin Cities fighting hard in the conference’s season-long race.
