Packers vs. 49ers 2024 NFL Divisional Round Odds, Preview & Pick

By Hank Blaine

The Green Bay Packers made playoff history over the weekend in becoming the first No. 7 seed to ever win a postseason game. The Pack’s reward on Saturday in the NFL’s Divisional Round is a date at NFC top-seeded San Francisco, which is a double-digit favorite.

The Packers and Niners didn’t play this season. It will mark the 10th time the Packers and 49ers will square off in the postseason, most of any single opponent for Green Bay. San Francisco leads the all-time playoff series 5-4, having won the last four in a row. They last played in the Divisional Round following the 2021 season in Green Bay and the Niners were 13-10 upset winners in the snow as Robbie Gould hit a 45-yard field goal as time expired.

Why Bet on the Green Bay Packers?

Green Bay was a 7-point underdog on Sunday in the Wild Card Round at Dallas, which had won 16 straight home games, but the Packers dominated in a 48-32 win. The Packers became the first No. 7 seed to win a playoff game and moved to 6-0 all-time at AT&T Stadium, with five wins against the Cowboys and one against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. That ties the Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons for the most wins by any team without a loss or tie at a single stadium all-time. It was the third time since 1998 that the Cowboys were at least seven point favorites in the playoffs — Dallas lost all three times.

The Packers’ 48 points tied for their most ever in a playoff game (2010 NFC divisional round at the Falcons). It was also the first time the Cowboys have ever allowed 40 points in a playoff game. Green Bay is the first team with three passing and rushing touchdowns each in a playoff game since the New England Patriots in the 2014 AFC Championship Game.

When safety Darnell Savage raced the other way with a pick-six off Dak Prescott late in the second quarter, the Packers were up 27-0. They eventually pushed the lead to 48-16 before the Cowboys scored two late touchdowns. The performance was as dominant as it gets, starting with an opening-drive touchdown that took nearly eight minutes off the clock. An interception by cornerback Jaire Alexander, who was a game-time decision with an ankle injury, set up the second score in the first quarter and the Packers were on their way.

QB Jordan Love was sensational in his playoff debut, completing 16 of 21 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns. He would have finished with a perfect passer rating if not for an incomplete pass on his final attempt. He finished with a 157.2 passer rating (min. 20 attempts), tied with C.J. Stroud for the third highest in NFL postseason history. When pressured, Love went 7-of-8 for 162 yards and two touchdowns. With a QBR of 99.3, Love became the first player to post a 99 QBR in a playoff game since the metric began in 2006. He joined Baker Mayfield (48 points) and Aaron Rodgers (45) as the only quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era to lead their team to at least 40 points on the road in their first playoff start.

“Man, Jordan Love, wow, that’s about all I can say, is wow,” Coach Matt LaFleur said. “What he did and the poise he shows and the command he shows.”

Aaron Jones had just two TDs all season but rushed 21 times for 118 yards and three touchdowns on Sunday. Jones capped the opening drive with a three-yard touchdown run on what was already his seventh carry of the game. He doubled Green Bay’s lead with a one-yard touchdown run in the first minute of the second quarter, then helped the Packers pull away with a nine-yard score in the third. Jones exceeded 100 rushing yards for the fourth consecutive game, so he’s peaking at the right time.

Romeo Doubs caught six passes for 151 yards and a touchdown against the Cowboys. The second-year receiver was responsible for four of Green Bay’s five longest passing plays, including a career-long 46-yard reception in the third quarter that set up Jones’ 9-yard TD run. Doubs became the third different receiver in as many games to go over 100 yards.

One bad note is that Alexander aggravated an ankle injury with a little more than five minutes left in the third quarter and did not return to the game. He said he was feeling OK afterwards, with LaFleur telling reporters at his postgame news conference that it will require additional treatment this week. Alexander was a game-time call as it was Sunday and had that pick-six for a 14-0 early lead.

Why Bet on the San Francisco 49ers?

The 49ers won the NFC West with a 12-5 regular-season record and earned the conference’s No. 1 seed and first-round bye. With Niners coach Kyle Shanahan aiming to improve his postseason record to 7-3 in seven seasons, look for San Francisco to rely heavily on Christian McCaffrey and the running game. No NFL team had more running plays of 10 or more yards than San Francisco’s 74 in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Packers rank in the bottom third in rushing yards against after first contact (29th with 906) and yards allowed per rush (23rd at 4.4).
