Real Madrid vs. Atalanta 2021 Champions League Odds and Preview

By Hank Blaine

The last encounter between these two teams wasn’t one to remember. Real Madrid took the win, 1-0, but it wasn’t that easy as they’ve might have thought. The only goal from that game came until the 85th minute. Plus, there was a controversial call for Atalanta from a foul at the early stage of the first half, when Remo Froehler fouled Mendy, getting instantly a red card, which many question if it was a legit call.

But there’s still hope for the Italian squad. Now headed to Spain, Atalanta are looking to shake things up and keep their hopes alive to remain in the tournament. And this just might happen. Madrid hasn’t had a great campaign so far.

Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming Real Madrid vs. Atlanta matchup, with an expert preview and prediction, and its latest Champions League betting lines. Be sure to check out this and more soccer odds for the tournament at our online BTC sportsbook.

Why is Real Madrid a safe bet in Game 2?

Looking at Real Madrid’s general performance, it’s been okay compared to previous years. They did take first place, but it’s only been the second time they’ve obtained that spot in the past five seasons. In fact, this was their 17th time in first place during the group phase. They are behind Barcelona, who’ve won first place of their respective group 21 times. This also is their 51st European Cup campaign, more than any other team.

They’ve progressed from eight of the last nine Champions League ties when winning the first game away from home. Also, they’ve won 11 of the last 12 encounters against an Italian team during the tournament, with at least two goals scored in 10 of those matchups. One interesting point to mention is that they haven’t won at home in the last four games of the knockout round, but have never lost three consecutive home games during this stage of the tournament.

As of now, the latest statistics indicate Real Madrid is scoring an average of 1.83 goals per game, with 1.50 goals conceded. As to what player you should look out for, one to mention would be Asensio, who hasn’t been able to score yet this season. He heads into this second leg with more shots without scoring than any other player, with 14 shots.

Why is Atalanta a safe bet in Game 2?

Compared to Real Madrid, they did slightly better in the group, though they ended in second place of Group D, right behind Liverpool. They head into the second leg with five wins under their sleeve during European away games, with 14 goals scored and three scored against. We can say their performance is quite solid.

This is the second time Atlanta will face a Spanish team as an away team during an European tournament. They are also on the longest run of away victories of any team in the competition, with winning their last five away games. They scored 14 goals across those five games and kept a clean sheet in four, which was three goals conceded. Those are quite the stats.

When we look at their recent stats, Atalanta is scoring 1.67 goals per game, with 1.33 goals conceded. Players like Josip Ilicic is one to watch in this one. He’s scored sic goals in his last four starts in a Champions League, with four of those goals scored during their last away trip to Spain. He also remains the only player to have four or more goals in a away game during the knockout round of the tournament.

Real Madrid vs. Atalanta Betting Prediction

I honestly don’t see Real Madrid making a difference or much of a bigger impact for this second leg game. Their performance, within and without of the Champions League, hasn’t been memorable. Yes, they are no strangers to winning this competition and have pulled off some great performances in moments like this. But I just see them improving much.

On the other hand, Atalanta has much to gain and their statistics prove exactly that. They might now be the roughest team, but they won’t go down without a fight, no matter how big or small their opponent is. They could just pull this off and surprise everyone. Watch these guys come March 16th.
