Seattle Seahawks 2023 Straight-Up Overview
Seattle’s surprising season happened because up until 2022, Geno Smith had been a backup quarterback. Smith had bided his time with the New York Jets. But in 2022, Smith leaped to QB stardom.
After beating out Drew Lock during the offseason, Geno dominated defenses, throwing for 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions. Smith completed close to 70% of his passes during the regular season.
It all came together for Geno, who finally got a chance to not only start, but to also throw to a devastating group of receivers led by D.K. Metcalf and burner Tyler Lockett. In April, the Hawks chose arguably the top WR in the draft in Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
If Smith-Njigba is what Carroll envisions, Metcalf and Lockett should have more room to catch Smith passes this season. When the Seahawks decide to go to the rushing attack, few are as talented as second-year pro Kenneth Walker III. Also, the offensive line is good. Left tackle Charles Cross is already one of the best in the league.
Seattle’s offense will rock. The defense is another story. The Seahawks improved by using their first round one pick on Devon Witherspoon. But if you can’t get a push up front, even a talented corner like Witherspoon will struggle.
Someone must step it up on the D-line or at linebacker. Knowing this, Carroll resigned Bobby Wagner, a Seattle defensive legend. Wagner bolted the Emerald City for the Rams before last season. Bobby’s return upgrades the Seahawks defense, but he may not be enough because Seattle’s schedule isn’t easy.
The Seahawks must rely on their offense to beat teams like San Francisco, Cincinnati, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. It won’t be easy. At the end, the Seahawks post a winning record by the slimmest of margins, going 9-8 with two losses to the rival 49ers, and losses to the Bengals, Ravens, Cowboys, Lions, Giants, and Eagles.

Seattle went 7-10 against the spread last season. The Seahawks won’t knock it out of the park, but they should win two more games against the spread.
