Spurs vs. Mavericks 2024 NBA Odds and Preview – February 14th

Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama had one of the great statistical lines in NBA history in his last game, and Wemby takes the court for the final time before the All-Star break on Wednesday as San Antonio visits Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks, who are heavy favorites and won the first two games of the season series rather easily.

Why Bet on the San Antonio Spurs?

That the Spurs ended a seven-game losing streak on Monday in a 122-99 win in Toronto was secondary to a spectacular performance from Spurs No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama as he likely locked up Rookie of the Year honors with a historic triple-double of 27 points (on 10-for-14 shooting), 14 rebounds and 10 blocks – to go with five assists, two steals and two made three-pointers.

He became the fifth player in NBA history with 25 points, 10 rebounds, 10 blocks and 5 assists in a game since blocks became an official statistic in 1973-74, joining Hakeem Olajuwon, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Robinson and Ralph Sampson — all members of the Hall of Fame. Only three rookies since 1973-74 had previously had a triple-double with blocks: Robinson, Sampson and Mark Eaton. Wemby was the first player to do it under 30 minutes of action. Wembanyama blocked the first shot of the game, a layup attempt from Jakob Poeltl, hitting a 3-pointer going the other way. That set the tone for dominance.

The 7-foot-4 Frenchman also was the first player ever to have a triple-double with blocks and multiple made 3-pointers and the first rookie to have a triple-double involving blocks and another involving assists (he had another triple-double earlier in the year) since blocks became an official statistic (1973-74). Wemby previously topped out at eight blocks against Memphis on Nov. 18. It was the first triple-double with blocks since Clint Capela had 13 points, 19 rebounds and 10 blocks for the Hawks against the Timberwolves on Jan. 22, 2021.

Overall this season, Wemby has 152 assists and 153 blocks this season, the first rookie with 150 assists and blocks in a season since Pau Gasol in 2001-02. Gasol would go on to win Rookie of the Year that season. Wembanyama leads the league in blocked shots and after Monday’s game was the first rookie with 150 blocks, 150 assists and 50 steals in a season since former Spurs Hall of Famer Tim Duncan in 1997-98. There are 28 games left in the Spurs’ season. Wembanyama is now averaging 20.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and an NBA-best 3.2 blocks in 48 games this season.

“He did a little bit of everything,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of his star rookie’s performance. “Obviously he’s an all-around, talented player. He’s got a great feel for the game and it shows in a variety of ways, whether it’s passing or making decisions, blocking shots.”

Devin Vassell also played well Monday with 25 points and six assists. It was his 10th game of the season with at least 25 points, as well as his fifth such contest in his past nine appearances. Jeremy Sochan scored 16 and Keldon Johnson had 12 as San Antonio led wire-to-wire.

Dallas won its fifth straight game Monday, 112-104 over Washington, the first time they’ve won five in a row this season as they improved to 31-23. Luka Doncic finished with a triple-double, racking up 26 points, 11 rebounds and 15 assists. It was the 66th triple double of his career and 10th this season. Luka’s night was punctuated by a blow to the chin on an offensive foul against Corey Kispert late in the third quarter.

“He’ll be fine,” Coach Jason Kidd said. “The stitches and the (broken) nose. He’s rolling with the face right now. I don’t know if he’s going to wear a mask. We’re a physical team, the Mavs. All the cuts and broken noses we have. You should see the other guys.”

Kyrie Irving had 26 points, while Daniel Gafford finished with 16 points and 17 rebounds, which tied his career best. Gafford was acquired by the Mavs from the Wizards last week. Monday was just Gafford’s second game with the Mavs, and thought so highly of him that he inserted him into the starting lineup. The strategy worked right away as Gafford collected eight of his rebounds in the first quarter, and overall picked up seven of the 12 offensive rebounds the Mavs had for the entire game.

Both Doncic and Irving are probable for Wednesday, while big men Dereck Lively and Maxi Kleber are questionable and guard Dante Exum remains out. Kleber has consistently received questionable tags but has played through his toe and nasal injuries in Dallas’ last nine contests.

The Mavericks currently lead the 2023-24 season series 2-0 vs. the Spurs after Dallas recorded a 126-119 win in San Antonio in the season opener on Oct. 25, 2023, and a 144-119 win in Big D on Dec. 23. The Mavs have won four of the last five and nine of the last 10 against the Spurs. In 18 career games vs. the Spurs, Doncic is averaging 30.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 9.2 assists per game.
