Why bet on the Golden State Warriors?

The last time the Warriors were in the play-in was in 2021 when they were the No. 8 seed and fell to the No. 7 seed Lakers, 103-100, as LeBron James recorded a triple-double (22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists) and made the game-deciding 3-pointer with 58.2 seconds left. The Warriors then lost to Memphis for the West’s final spot.

The Warriors and Kings split the regular season series, 2-2, with each of the last three meetings decided by one point. Entering this season, the Warriors had never had three or more games decided by one point against the same opponent within the same regular season (consecutive or otherwise). The last time this happened league-wide was in 2016-17 when the Knicks and 76ers had three meetings decided by one point.

These teams last played on Jan. 25 in San Francisco, and the Kings were 134–133 winners as Domantas Sabonis made a go-ahead dunk with 22 seconds left. After that dunk, Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga got blocked by Barnes with 18 seconds to go, hoping he’d get a whistle. Sacramento’s Kevin Huerter missed a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining to give the Warriors one last chance. Curry dribbled around the perimeter trying to get a look and lost the ball — a similar ending to the Warriors’ 124-123 loss Nov. 28 when he turned the ball over late. Curry finished with 33 points.

Golden State played Sunday’s finale against Utah without Curry, Draymond Green and Gary Payton III but Curry and Green will play Tuesday. Payton will not play or even in the next game should the Warriors win. Coach Steve Kerr said the excellent defensive reserve guard would be re-evaluated if Golden State reaches the final West playoffs.

Curry still led the NBA in 3-pointers made with 357, the third-most in a season in NBA history. Curry owns five of the top six spots on the NBA’s single-season 3-pointers made list. The 357 threes are the second-most 3-pointers made in a single season for Curry, trailing only his NBA-record 402 in 2015-16.

In the final 12 games of the 2023-24 regular season, the Warriors allowed 105.4 points per game, the second-fewest in the NBA in that span. In that 12-game span, Golden State has the third-best defensive rating (107.8) in the NBA. Since January 30, the Warriors had the second-most wins (27) in the NBA, trailing only the Celtics (28). Golden State ranked first in rebounding (47.6 rpg), tied for second in assists (30.3 apg), fifth in scoring (116.9 ppg) and second in 3-pointers made (14.5).

Why bet on the Sacramento Kings?

This is a rematch of the 2023 Western Conference first round when the Kings also had home-court advantage in the series but lost Game 7 at home 120-100 as Steph Curry put up a playoff career-high 50 points, the first 50-point outing in a Game 7 in NBA history. Curry scored at least 30 points in five of the seven games (and the two he didn’t he had 28 and 29 points).

The previous mark in a Game 7 was 48 points by Kevin Durant with the Nets vs. Milwaukee in 2021. Brooklyn lost that game. It was still a successful season for the Kings, as they snapped a 16-season playoff drought, the longest in NBA history.

Sacramento remains very short-handed with starting guard Kevin Huerter out for the season and Sixth Man of the Year candidate Malk Monk also likely done for the year unless the Kings get to the West Finals. Monk led the NBA over 1,100 points, 370 assists, 148 made 3’s and 170 free throws made off the bench. The six-year veteran averages 15.4 points and 5.1 assists per game. The pending free agent might have played his final game in a Kings uniform.

“I’m comfortable in Sacramento.” Monk said. “I’d love to play here again, for sure. I’ve been here for two years and made friends with everyone, including the training staff and front office. I’d love to be back here.”

Sabonis led the NBA with 77 double-doubles this season and with 26 triple-doubles. He is one of five players in NBA history to total 25 triple-doubles or more in a season. Sabonis is the first player since Moses Malone (1979-80: 77) with 75+ double-doubles in a season and the fifth player since the ABA-NBA merger. During his Kings tenure, Sabonis has recorded 153 double-doubles, which ranks eighth in franchise history.
