2021 Barracuda Championship Recap

Starting in 2012, the Barracuda began using the Modified Stableford points system instead of the classic whichever golfer shoots under par wins system. The Modified Stableford points system encourages aggressive play as opposed not make a mistake play. Double eagles count for 8 points. Eagles count for 5 points. Birdies count for 2 points.

A par is 0 points. A bogey is -1 and a double bogey is -3. Last year, Erik Van Rooyen won with a +50. Andrew Putnam finished second with a +45, followed by Scott Piercy in third with a +44, and Adam Schenk in fourth with a +43.

Top Pick to Win the 2022 Barracuda Championship

Mark Hubbard finished second at the Barbasol Championship last week. He shot 5 bogeys, but he also shot 23 birdies and 2 eagles. If he repeats the performance this week, Hubbard will turn in his scorecard with 51 points. So why is Mark at +2300? We don’t know.

In any case, he offers overlay odds to win the Barracuda Championship. Jump on the 23-to-1 if you want to back the golfer offering the highest overlay odds.

Second Top Pick to Win the 2022 Barracuda Championship

Martin Laird has hit the ball well in his last couple of tournaments played. He finished the Travelers Championship tied thirteenth and then stepped off the course at the John Deere Classic a tied thirtieth.

At the Travelers, Laird scored 18 birdies and 8 bogeys. At the John Deere, Laird shot 2 eagles, 8 bogies, and 17 birdies. Both the John Deere Classic and the Travelers Championship are much higher profile tournaments than the Barracuda. If Laird shows up with the form he had during his last couple of tournaments played, he can run away with this.

Third Top Pick to Win the 2022 Barracuda Championship

Doug Ghim played at the Scottish Open last week. He finished well, clocking a tied sixteenth. Instead of pushing his luck at St. Andrews, though, Ghim decided to return to the U.S. and enter the Barracuda Championship.

Doug shot well enough at the Scottish Open to suggest he has success over this much easier course. He should cut down on his bogeys big time, he had 11, and increase his birdie count, he had 14. Ghim could also knock in an eagle. If the +2500 choice is aggressive enough, he’ll lift the trophy.

Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2022 Barracuda Championship

Hurley Long offers overlay odds to win the Barracuda Championship. Hurly shot just 4 bogeys at the Barbasol last week. Long performed well enough to finish third. He putted in an eagle and scored an amazing 23 birdies. If Long performs the same way at the Barracuda Championship that he did at the Barbasol he’ll end up with 47 points.

That might not enough to win. But, maybe, Long picks up his game and scores over 50. He’s good enough and his form last week suggests it’s more than possible. So at +4000, Hurly Long a must consider for sure.
