Ohio State Buckeyes
- 2022 Big Ten Championship Odds: -222
Whether it’s Urban Meyer or Ryan Day as the mastermind of Buckeyes Football, there’s simply no stopping Ohio State from being the odds-on favorite to win the Big Ten championship each and every year. In four seasons under Day, the Buckeyes have won three conference titles and one national championship game appearance. Starting quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate C.J. Stroud is out for revenge in 2022, especially with his team’s streak of Big Ten title wins having been cut short by none other than the next team featured here.
Michigan Wolverines
- 2022 Big Ten Championship Odds: +650
At long last, Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines finally got one over those darn Buckeyes for the Big Ten championship. Michigan finished with an impressive 12-2 record and a conference title victory to make the College Football Playoff for the first time in the Harbaugh regime. With top defender Aidan Hutchinson now in the NFL, many Michigan fans are high on five-star freshman Will Johnson to do the most damage for what should still be a stout defensive unit. In turn, the Wolverines should be seen as direct competitors to Ohio State for conference supremacy despite what the current odds imply.
Dark Horses
Michigan State Spartans
- 2022 Big Ten Championship Odds: +2500
Make no mistake; Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker did a wonderful job of turning the Spartans into an 11-2 squad for the team’s best finish in the regular season since 2015. However, many experts would argue that MSU benefitted from a relatively weak schedule in 2021. That being said, the Spartans still make for a very intriguing sleeper pick to win the Big Ten championship this upcoming season, especially if quarterback Payton Thorne further improves upon his 27 passing touchdowns to complement the Spartans’ already strong running game.
Purdue Boilermakers

Another Big Ten program that re-emerged as a respectable force in the conference is Purdue, which finished with a nine-win season and capped off with a Bowl-game victory over Tennessee. The Boilermakers even have a much easier schedule in the upcoming season compared to their bounce-back 2021 campaign, as only No. 18 Wisconsin appears as their only top-25 opponent on their schedule to date. This is quite an omen that Purdue might just contend with the other heavyweights of the Big Ten for the conference crown as a superb sleeper pick to date.

Northwestern Wildcats
- 2022 Big Ten Championship Odds: +15000
It’s been a wild ride ever since Pat Fitzgerald took over the Northwestern program back in 2006. Fitzgerald has nine winning seasons in his 16 years as head coach of the Wildcats, and 2021 wasn’t one of those winning campaigns with the team ending with just three wins overall. The quarterback controversy between South Carolina transfer Ryan Hilinski and freshman Brendan Sullivan is also another hurdle that the Wildcats must overcome as longshots to shock the Big Ten title race’s picture.
