Nebraska versus Northwestern, North Carolina, and Florida State highlight opening day action

A Big Ten matchup highlights opening day. The Nebraska Cornhuskers throw down against the Northwestern Wildcats in what promises to be a terrific game. Both teams have something to prove heading into the new season.

This is especially true because USC and UCLA will soon join the Big Ten. Will Big Ten officials hand the Huskers or Wildcats their walking papers? There could be more at stake in Nebraska versus Northwestern than many realize.

North Carolina is also in action on August 27. The Tar Heels face Florida A&M. Florida State takes on Duquesne. Both ACC teams should win their first games of the season.

On Sep. 1, Penn State at Purdue and West Virginia at Pittsburgh are huge games

The Big Ten battles continue when one of the first week’s most important matchups takes place between Penn State and Purdue. The Nittany Lions will be looking for a bounce back season while Purdue will be hoping to repeat their 2021 success.

Lions versus Boilermakers should set the season tone for each team. The winner could be on their way to challenging for the Big Ten title while the loser could be on their way to missing out on a bowl game.

West Virginia versus Pittsburgh is the other huge game on Sep. 1. Pitt lost quarterback Kenny Pickett to the NFL Draft. Pickett’s top target last season, Jordan Addison, transferred to USC. Is Pittsburgh as dangerous this season as they were last season? West Virginia underperformed in 2021. Will the proud program bounce back in 2022?

Sep. 3 could go a long way in determining what happens the rest of the season

On Sep. 3, Georgia takes on Oregon in Atlanta, Cincinnati heads to Arkansas, Utah takes on Florida, and Notre Dame and Ohio State throw down.

In Bearcats versus Razorbacks, college football fans will watch to see if Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell can maintain the excellence the program established when making the College Football Playoffs last season. Arkansas surprised in the deep SEC. Do the Razorbacks have legs? Or will they revert to SEC doormat status?

Georgia lost 8 starters from their 2021 defense. The Bulldogs face an Oregon team out to prove they can still compete with the best. Utah versus Florida might be the most intriguing game in week 1. The Gators welcome new coach Billy Napier. The former Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns HC believes Florida can compete for an SEC title in 2022.

Utah almost upset Ohio State in the Rose Bowl last season. The Utes have enough talent to challenge USC for the Pac-12 title. Ohio State versus Notre Dame is the first week’s top 10 matchup. The Buckeyes plan on winning the Big Ten this season and grabbing a CFP bid. Notre Dame wants to show that losing coach Brian Kelly to LSU is no issue because new HC Marcus Freeman knows what he’s doing.

The winner of Florida State versus LSU on Sep. 4 could end up challenging for their conference title

Florida State should be much improved from last season. Also, like in most seasons, the ACC isn’t deep. So if the Seminoles upset Kelly and LSU in New Orleans, we should consider Florida State an ACC contender.

Brian Kelly, the former Notre Dame coach, must prove LSU is back to where they were in 2019. Plenty of coaches have switched conferences to head up an SEC squad only to realize how difficult it is to coach against guys like Kirby Smart and Nick Saban.

Beating Florida State will go a long way in assuaging any fears LSU fans have about Kelly’s ability to win in the deepest conference in the nation. If LSU loses, especially because the game happens in New Orleans, expect plenty of LSU fans to call for Kelly’s resignation. Fans at universities like Louisiana State don’t wait. Kelly took the job, which means he must field an SEC contender starting day 1.
