Saturday, Aug. 27
Wyoming Cowboys vs. Illinois Fighting Illini
Backing Illinois at -10 doesn’t seem like a good idea. But the Illini should be a much better team in their second season under Bret Bielema than they were in their first. Former Syracuse QB Tommy DeVito will pace an offense that returns two starters along the line. The defense ranked 29 th last season. So give Illinois the nod to cover.

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Pittsburgh Panthers
West Virginia should be much better than college football fans believe. Former USC and Georgia quarterback J.T. Daniels figures to start. The offensive line returns all five starters and the defensive line is loaded. WVU can win this straight up. For sure take the points.
2022 College Football Week 1 Pick: West Virginia +6.5
Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Purdue Boilermakers
The odds make Purdue an overlay. The Boilermakers return an experienced offense line, a better quarterback in Aidan O’Connell than what the Nittany Lions have in Sean Clifford, and a good defense. Penn State’s offensive line is practically new and Clifford has never produced the type of game that Lions fans have hoped. Boilermakers win this straight up. Take the points if you don’t see a moneyline.
2022 College Football Week 1 Pick: Purdue +3.5

Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Arkansas Razorbacks
This should be a fantastic game. The Bearcats must replace quarterback Desmond Ridder but all 5 offensive linemen return. Most of Arkansas’ O-line returns and so does quarterback K.J. Jefferson. Both defenses should be good. Arkansas deserves to be the chalk, but they’re giving too many points. Back the Bearcats.
2022 College Football Week 1 Pick: Cincinnati +6.5
Arizona Wildcats vs. San Diego State Aztecs
San Diego State returns just 3 starters along the offensive line. That should open the door for the young but talented Wildcats to push for the victory in this. Arizona coach Jedd Fisch landed the nation’s 26 th ranked recruiting class. It’s the best recruiting class in Arizona history. Don’t be surprised if U-of-A wins this straight up.

BYU Cougars vs. South Florida Bulls
San Diego State returns just 3 starters along the offensive line. That should open the door for the young but talented Wildcats to push for the victory in this. 2022 College Football Week 1 Pick: BYU -12
Memphis Tigers vs. Mississippi State Bulldgos
Mississippi State returns 8 starters on offense and 8 starters on defense. Returning starters is the best way to gauge success. But Memphis is a solid AAC squad. The Tigers shouldn’t win this game. Memphis has enough experience, though, to keep this to within 16 points.

Florida State Spartans vs. LSU Tigers
Brian Kelly inherits a talented group, but it could take the former Notre Dame coach some time to get everyone on the same page, which is why Florida State is the pick. FSU returning quarterback Jordan Travis went 5-2 in his final 7 games. The defense and offense have improved big time and coach Mike Norvell hired analysts to help with game planning and assistants to help with recruiting. Florida State could return to the glory days this season. It starts with an upset moneyline victory over LSU.
