Top 2022 NBA Week 13 Betting Picks

By Hank Blaine

Could this be the week that the Philadelphia 76ers finally trade All-Star Ben Simmons? The NBA trade deadline is just over a month away. The Atlanta Hawks have been added as a potential new suitor although they obviously aren’t giving up Trae Young for Simmons. GM Travis Schlenk said in a radio interview recently that he is openly questioning the wisdom of bringing back the same team after the Hawks’ Cinderella run to last season’s Eastern Conference finals. Here’s a look at two intriguing early-week NBA matchups.

San Antonio Spurs vs. New York Knicks

  • When: Monday, January 10, 2022. 7:30 pm ET
  • Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
  • TV: NBA TV
  • Radio: 1200 WOAI (Spurs) // ESPN New York 98.7 FM (Knicks)
  • Live Stream: NBA League Pass
  • NBA Betting Odds: TBA

These teams met on Dec. 7 in San Antonio and the Knicks won 121-109. R.J. Barrett made a career-high seven 3-pointers and scored 32 points. Alec Burks scored 18 points, Immanuel Quickley added 16 points and Julius Randle had 15 for the Knicks, who won at San Antonio for the first time since Jan. 2, 2014. The Knicks were 18 for 38 on 3-pointers, with Barrett going 7 for 8. Derrick White had 26 points along with six rebounds and seven assists for the Spurs. Dejounte Murray added 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Starting Knicks guard Evan Fournier is questionable for this one after sitting Saturday with a left thigh contusion. Fournier posted a career high 41 points and tied the Knicks all-time franchise record with 10 made three pointers in his last game, which was also against Boston. He became the first Knick ever to make 10+ 3- point field goals while shooting 70% or better from the 3-point line; he also became the seventh player in NBA history to do so, joining Fred VanVleet, Zach LaVine, Klay Thompson, Walker, Stephen Curry and Ray Allen.

Nerlens Noel is questionable as well. Due to health and safety protocols, Noel has not appeared in a game since December 21. So is Kemba Walker. He has missed the Knicks’ last five games due to the sore knee.

It’s the second of a back-to-back for the Spurs as they lost 121-119 in OT at the Nets on Sunday. Rookie Cam Thomas made a runner in the lane with 1.4 seconds left in overtime. Lonnie Walker scored a season-high 25 points in the loss. With Derrick White, Keldon Johnson, and Devin Vassell in league protocols, San Antonio was missing a lot of offense and Walker stepped up. The Spurs average 28.2 assists per game, tied for the most assists in the NBA. They are averaging 10.8 three-point field goals for the highest single-season average in Spurs history.

NBA Betting Pick: Knicks

Golden State Warriors vs. Memphis Grizzlies

  • When: Tuesday, January 11, 2022. 8:00 pm ET
  • Where: FedExForum, Memphis, TN
  • TV: NBA TV
  • Radio: 95.7 The Game (Warriors) // WMFS-FM 92.9 (Grizzlies)
  • Live Stream: NBA League Pass
  • NBA Betting Odds: TBA

After suffering a sprained left ankle, Memphis Grizzlies forward Dillon Brooks is expected to miss a minimum of three to five weeks, and could remain sidelined through the mid-February All-Star break. Brooks injured the ankle in a victory over the LA Clippers on Saturday. Brooks is considered an immense part — both offensively and defensively — of the Western Conference’s fourth-seeded Grizzlies. On the season, Brooks has averaged a career-high 18.4 points and 1.3 steals per game, shooting 43% from the floor, 33% from deep and 80% from the free throw line.

Golden State could really take off now that All-Star guard Klay Thompson made his season debut on Sunday. Thompson hadn’t played since Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, a span of 941 days. Thompson is the only player in NBA history who was had at least four All-Star nominations and missed over 170 consecutive regular season games due to injury before returning to play for the same team. New York’s Bernard King missed 169 games.

The Warriors have the best defensive rating (102.2) and tied for the 10th-best offensive rating (110.9). Golden State ranks first in assists (28.0 apg), fourth in field goal percentage (.470), seventh in 3-point field goal percentage (.363), and 11th in the NBA in scoring (110.2 ppg). Defensively, the Warriors rank first in opponent scoring (101.4 ppg), first in opponent field goal percentage (.425), second in steals (9.47 spg), seventh in rebounding (45.9 rpg) and second in opponent 3-point field goal percentage (.325).

These teams have played twice this season and split. They last did on Dec. 23 in San Francisco and the Warriors won 113-104. SCO Stephen Curry scored 46 points and made eight 3-pointers, and Gary Payton Jr. added a clutch 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter. Payton finished with 22 points and Draymond Green had nine assists.

The Warriors led comfortably most of the second half before the Grizzlies made a late push and tied it at 102-all on De’Anthony Melton’s layup. But Juan Tosco-Anderson scored on a reverse, Payton made his fourth 3 and Curry scurried past three defenders in the key for a layup to help Golden State pull away. Ja Morant had 21 points for Memphis, which had won its previous six road games.

NBA Betting Pick: Warriors
