Before the tournament starts, back a blue blood program to win it all

Every year, there’s a team that exacerbates the imagination. But the program almost always fails to deliver. Since 2019, that team has been the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Even his season, Gonzaga opened at number two behind blue blood North Carolina. Both program have underwhelmed this season. So has the Duke Blue Devils.

One blue blood that hasn’t are the Kansas Jayhawks. So when we write blue blood, we mean a blue blood current program.

So think Kansas, Baylor, Arizona, Houston, and UCLA this season. Alabama, although a great hoops squad, is not a blue blood program. So the chances of Bama winning the title are probably less than the odds imply.

Most money line upsets happen in the first two rounds

By the time the Sweet 16 rolls around, money line upsets are going to be difficult to find. Overrated teams tend to lose in the first couple of rounds.

Think Indiana and Iowa last season. Both teams got the press heading into the NCAA Tournament and both squads bowed out before the second round.

Cinderella can hang out at the ball until the Final Four

St. Peter’s made it all the way to the Elite Eight. Then, the Peacocks fell to another Cinderella squad, the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Right now, it doesn’t look like there’s a top Cinderella team. But that doesn’t mean one won’t emerge from the pack. If there is a Cinderella you really like, consider backing that dog all the way to the Elite Eight.

But don’t get too excited. Runs like St. Peters’ from last season don’t often happen.

Don’t get sucked into over-hyped teams

Right now, Alabama is an over-hyped team. Houston isn’t because Kelvin Sampson has history as a tournament coach and the Cougs made it to the Final Four in 2019.

But the Crimson Tide is a football school first. Also, the only SEC team to have a lot of tournament success, not counting Florida in the early 2000s, are the Kentucky Wildcats.

For sure back Bama if you truly believe. But do you truly believe?

1 and 2 seeds are 1 and 2 seeds for a reason

1 and 2 seeds make, by far, more Final Fours than any other seeds. 1 and 2 seeds also win the title more than any other seeds.

Kansas cut down the nets as a 1 last season. In 2021, Baylor beat fellow 1-seed Gonzaga in the title game.

In 2019, Virginia beat 3-seed Texas Tech in the title. 1 and 2 seeds are tough to beat once they get to the Sweet 16.

Handicap coaches as well as handicapping teams

For sure, handicap teams. But you must also handicap coaches. Bill Self is a master at getting the Jayhawks ready for the Final Four.

Tommy Lloyd took Arizona to the Sweet 16 in his first season. Expect the Wildcats to reach the Elite Eight this season.

Mark Few’s Gonzaga teams perform well until the Sweet 16 in most cases. Most Big Ten coaches fail in the tournament. For all of his greatness, and he’s got a lot of it, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo isn’t a consistent tournament HC.
