Favorites
Los Angeles Dodgers

Another season, another instance of the mighty Dodgers leading the field as odds-on favorites to win the World Series. Los Angeles is never short of talent on its squad and 2023 should be no different. The Dodgers do have some issues with their infield lineup after the departures of Trea Turner and Corey Seager, but a roster filled with former MVPs like Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Clayton Kershaw shouldn’t worry much about team depth at all. Getting back starting ace Walker Buehler from last year’s season-ending injury is also a huge plus.
Houston Astros

The reigning World Series champions are also considered co-favorites to win the 2023 World Series, as the Astros also boast one of the most stacked rosters in all of professional baseball. Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez, and Alex Bregman all make compelling cases as AL MVP candidates every season, while Dominican southpaw Framber Valdez is a Cy Young nominee in the making. If phenomenal young shortstop Jeremy Pena also makes the next big leap to stardom, the Astros could very well become the first back-to-back World Series champs since the Yankees dynasty in the late 1990s.

Los Angeles Angels

The Dodgers’ neighboring rivals from the American League are top-heavy in star power as well with arguably the two best baseball players right now in five-tool savant Mike Trout and two-way threat Shohei Ohtani. However, the Angels’ weakness, like in the past few seasons, remains its pitching corps. Outside of Ohtani, no LA starting pitcher had an ERA below 3.60 last season. Hence, the Halos are once again seen as no more than sleeper picks to finally win the World Series for the first time since 2002.
San Francisco Giants

The West Coast is certainly filled with a ton of intrigue this postseason, with the Giants narrowly missing out on the Carlos Correa sweepstakes. San Francisco is a well-run franchise that has done more with less (see their record-breaking 2021 regular season), and settling for lesser offseason pickups on offense like Mitch Haniger and Michael Conforto could end up being a blessing in disguise. The Giants also stockpiled a bevy of capable starting pitchers this offseason as well, and it’s this promising pitching staff that makes them decent sleeper picks to become World Series champs yet again.

The moment that Juan Soto left The Capital for San Diego’s greener pastures in the middle of last season, the writings were on the wall that the Nationals were in for a long rebuild. The Nats have seen their 2019 title-winning team gutted down to almost nothing outside of ace starter Stephen Strasburg, who’s not had a Cy Young-worthy campaign in quite some time himself. Simply put, Washington should be seen as no more than a longshot to return to the MLB mountaintop with their current inexperienced roster.
