Baffert unleashes Muth and Imagination
Churchill Downs has again suspended Bob Baffert from running horses under the Twin Spires, which is why both Muth and Imagination were on the bench during the Kentucky Derby. But at Pimlico, Baffert has entered both, which means white haired Bob controls the winning cards.
Muth beat Mystik Dan to take the Arkansas Derby. Imagination has finished first or second in all 6 of his races. Imagination, a $1.05 million purchase sired by Into Mischief, looked like the Santa Anita Derby winner before falling to Stronghold by a neck.
If either has improved from their last races, Mystik Dan could be in some trouble. Baffert stole the Preakness to end Mage’s Triple Crown attempt last year with National Treasure. Muth’s morning line makes him almost unplayable, though. So lean towards backing Imagination if you believe Baffert wins a second straight Preakness.
Tuscan Gold might be as talented as Sierra Leone
Chad Brown saw enough from Tuscan Gold in the horse’s third place finish in the Louisiana Derby to point the Medaglia d’Oro sired colt towards the Preakness. First, Brown believes Tuscan Gold may have as much talent as Sierra Leone, the nosed out second place finisher in the Kentucky Derby.
Second, Brown has won the Preakness with this exact move, skipping the Derby and running in the second jewel. Brown won the Preakness with Cloud Computing in 2017. Then he repeated the sit and pounce move with Early Voting in 2022. For sure, Tuscan Gold should be on your radar.
Mystik Dan must prevent a bounce
The Derby winner has the talent, breeding, and training to win the Triple Crown. What Dan may not have is the ability to come back after a brutal race in the Kentucky Derby to win the Preakness off two weeks’ rest.
Mystik Dan fought as hard a horse can fight to hold off Sierra Leone and Forever Young. Such a tough race usually sends a horse to the sidelines for at least three weeks, if not a month or more. So if Mystik Dan is going to win the Preakness, he’s going to have to prevent the inevitable bounce that all modern day horses seem to suffer after racing hard in their previous event.
Signs point to Dan bouncing to the moon. Kenny McPeek was on the fence about entering Mystik Dan in the Preakness. He only did so probably because the owners requested Dan run. If that’s the case, Mystik Dan is an underlay at 5/2.
