Why Bet on Carlos Alcaraz?

Even though Carlos Alcaraz needed four sets to beat Taro Daniel in the second round of the French Open, three of the four sets that he won during that match were cakewalks. Alcaraz lost no more than two games in those three winning sets as the Spanish sensation continues his quest for a second-career Grand Slam title.

Alcaraz recently won the 2022 US Open and might’ve also gone the distance at this year’s Australian Open had it not been for an untimely hamstring injury. The 20-year-old standout picked up right where he left off after recovering from the setback and won two tournaments on clay in his home country (Madrid and Barcelona) to give him huge momentum entering the French Open.

Last season, Alcaraz set a new personal-best finish at Roland Garros with a quarterfinal appearance before losing that match to Alexander Zverev. As the heir apparent to Rafael Nadal’s throne as the Spanish king of the clay courts, it stands to reason that Alcaraz is seen as an overwhelming favorite to reach the fourth round of the French Open in back-to-back years.

Why Bet on Denis Shapovalov?

Having a much tougher going in Roland Garros, meanwhile, is 28th-seeded Denis Shapovalov. The 24-year-old Canadian needed four sets as well to escape the second round against Matteo Arnaldi but also had to emerge victorious from a five-set gauntlet against Brandon Nakashima in the opening round.

Both of Shapovalov’s first two opponents in the French Open are relative unknowns, which does not bode well for his chances of going deep in the tournament even as a lower-seeded entry. Then again, he’s been a tough out in Grand Slam tourneys of late, reaching the semis of Wimbledon in 2021 and the quarterfinals of last season’s Australian Open.

This is also the first time that Shapovalov will face Alcaraz head-to-head. The element of surprise is in the former’s favor, although Alcaraz’s failure to advance past the second round in four career trips to Roland Garros probably still looms heavily on the southpaw’s mind.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Denis Shapovalov Betting Trends

  • Alcaraz currently has a 32-3 record this season.
  • Alcaraz is 61-13 lifetime on the clay courts.
  • Shapovalov is now 9-10 for the season.
  • Shapovalov is 14-12 on clay since 2021.

Alcaraz vs. Shapovalov Expert Betting Prediction

This should be another efficient winning performance for Alcaraz, who has been on a tear on the clay courts this season. Shapovalov doesn’t have a good track record against top-10 opponents as well, which means that Alcaraz could easily win this third-round bout in straight sets despite his relatively underwhelming win in the previous round.
