Bears vs. Patriots 2022 NFL Week 7 Odds, Preview & Pick

By Hank Blaine

The best rookie quarterback in the NFL so far has been New England Patriots fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe and he’s expected to start again Monday night when the Patriots host the offensively struggling Chicago Bears.

It’s the 15th meeting overall between the Patriots and Bears (including Super Bowl XX). The Patriots have won the last five including a 38-31 win at Chicago on Oct. 21, 2018 in the last meeting between the two teams. Chicago is 0-2 in their only two visits to Gillette Stadium, losing 17-13 in 2006 and 51-23 at Gillette Stadium in 2014.

This will be the third straight meeting in late October. The teams met on Oct. 26, 2014 at Gillette Stadium and on Oct. 21, 2018 at Chicago. The Patriots hold a 10-3 overall lead in the regular-season series, but Chicago claimed a victory in the teams’ only postseason matchup, taking a 46-10 decision in Super Bowl XX. Since Super Bowl XX, the Patriots have recorded an 8-1 edge against Chicago.

Why Bet on the Chicago Bears?

The Bears lost 12-7 at home to Washington on Thursday in Week 6 and have by far the worst passing offense in the NFL. The good news is that he’s making faster decisions. Fields averaged 3.26 seconds until releasing the ball after two games. Four weeks later he is down to 3.03 seconds. He’s in 37th overall among quarterbacks but within 0.13 seconds of five others.

“Yeah, just like we’ve been saying, and I think he’s been improving on it,” coach Matt Eberflus said. “It’s his footwork and the timing, and we think he’s doing a good job with that.”

Chicago ground game has been good. Despite injuries to David Montgomery, the Bears have been effective grinding out yards. Chicago is second in the league, averaging 170.8 yards per game and seventh at 5.2 yards per carry. Montgomery averages 4 yards per carry as the lead back but Khalil Herbert offers more explosiveness and averages 6.4 yards on the same amount of attempts (Herbert has 63 to Montgomery’s 62). Fields also offers a running element with 54 carries for 282 yards and a 5.2-yard average.

Each of the Bears’ last three losses has been by a one-score margin, with the offense having a possession in the final two minutes with a chance to tie the game or take the lead.

Why Bet on the New England Patriots?

New England starting QB Mac Jones suffered a high ankle sprain at the end of Week 3, and his timeline for recovery was expected to take six weeks. Ultimately, the decision on Jones’ availability for Monday will continue to come from the team’s medical staff. Jones has been open to playing through injury. Led by rookie QB Bailey Zappe, the Patriots have won back-to-back games in blowout fashion.

In games he has started – Detroit Lions at home and Cleveland Browns on the road – Zappe is 2-0. He entered the Green Bay Packers’ Week 4 matchup early due to Brian Hoyer’s head injury as the Patriots lost 27-24 in overtime, making him 2-1 in all contests.

In three games, Zappe has thrown for 596 yards, completed 51 of 70 passes (72.9%), tossed four touchdowns to one pick and has been sacked five times. His longest throw of the season was 53 yards against the Browns in Week 6. Zappe, who recorded a 100 passer rating in his first career start in Week 5, is the third rookie quarterback in the Super Bowl era to record a passer rating of 100-or-higher in each of his first two career starts, joining Hall of Famer Dan Marino (1983) and Andy Dalton (2011).

Zappe has also benefited from playing with a lead, and some rather large windows in which to throw. The Patriots have also simplified their approach, with what seems to be a noticeably lower degree of difficulty. Because of that, it remains unknown whether he could carry the offense to a victory should a more difficult scenario present itself.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has 324 combined regular-season and postseason wins, tied with Hall of Famer George Halas of the Bears (324) for the second-most wins by a head coach all-time. Only Hall of Famer Don Shula (347 combined regular-season and postseason wins) has more.
