Can the Lightning Tie Game 2 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final?

By Carlos Chacon

Game 1 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final Wednesday was as tense as it could get, with the Colorado Avalanche needing overtime to take the opening bout of the series over the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-3. There’s still plenty of time for the Lightning to catch up. After all, the defending two-time Stanley Cup champs are back in the title picture for good reason.

Nitrobetting is ready to dish out some slick assists to get bets into the back of the net. This time, let’s find out the Tampa Bay Lightning’s three keys to victory this Saturday in order to even up the 2022 Stanley Cup Finals series against the Colorado Avalanche at two games apiece.

Match Colorado’s Aggression on the Attack

In Game 1’s battle between two prolific offenses, the Avalanche were simply better at attacking the net than the Lightning by out-shooting the Bolts by a whopping 38-23 margin in shots-on-goal.

Tampa Bay averaged nearly 35 shots-on-goal across their four wins in the Eastern Conference Final series against the Rangers, who even have arguably a much better goaltender in Igor Shesterkin than Colorado’s own Darcy Kuemper. Instead, the Lightning made Kuemper look real good in the season opener despite having just recently returned from an injury suffered in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final.

Find A Way Containing the Avs’ Heavy-Hitters

Tampa Bay had not given up four or more goals in a contest since dropping Game 1 of the WCF to the Rangers until Wednesday’s Stanley Cup Final series opener against the Avalanche. Nathan MacKinnon had his hand with an assist, Mikko Rantanen dished out a pair of helpers himself, and Gabriel Landeskog found the back of the net alongside Andre Burakovsky, who scored the early game-winner in OT.

The Lightning have a deep platoon of defensemen to work with at that with the likes of Victor Hedman, Ryan McDonagh, Zach Bogosian, and Mikhail Sergachev are all competent bodies from the blue line as well as on the offensive, while one should expect former Conn Smythe Trophy winner Andrei Vasilevskiy to clamp down between the pipes with the stakes at their highest like he’s done so over the past couple of Stanley Cup Final appearances.

Bolts Always Ready for A Bounce-Back Effort

One trend that stands out for Tampa Bay is that the team recovers very well following a huge loss. In fact, the Lightning never led their first-round series against the Maple Leafs until winning Game 7 in Toronto and faced an early 2-0 series deficit in the ECF against the Rangers before winning four straight to reach the Final.

Simply put, the Lightning’s experience in big-game moments cannot be underestimated. They also suffered a 4-1 loss in Game 1 of the 2020 Stanley Cup Final against the Dallas Stars before taking four of the next five games of the series to kick-start Tampa Bay’s mini-dynasty and as evident proof that the team should not be fazed by the early stumble against the Avs this year.
