Why bet on the Los Angeles Dodgers?

The opening odds are projected because the Dodgers haven’t listed their starting pitcher. Their rotation is an injured mess right now other than Clayton Kershaw, who pitched in Tuesday’s series opener, and Tony Gonsolin, who himself hasn’t been back all that long from injury.

There’s a decent chance that it will be rookie Emmet Sheehan on the mound for LA. He made his major-league debut last Friday at home vs. the Giants and dazzled after being called up directly from Double-A Tulsa. The 23-year-old, in his third season with the Dodgers organization, threw 51 of 89 pitches for strikes, with his fastball averaging 95.6 mph. He struck out three and walked two. He left with a 4-0 lead but the Dodgers couldn’t hold it and eventually lost.

“I was just trying to make it the same game as it is in Double-A — which it is,” Sheehan said. “I was definitely a little overwhelmed but to get it out of the way is a huge weight off my shoulders.”

The 45th Boston College baseball alum to reach the show, Sheehan got the call after going 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA in 53 innings with Double-A Tulsa this season. Sheehan is a graduate of Fordham Prep, the same high school in New York City (the Bronx) attended by the late Dodgers Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sheehan will remain in the Dodgers’ rotation for at least one more start.

The Dodgers are without third baseman Max Muncy as he landed on the IL with a left hamstring strain. Muncy has struggled offensively this season, hitting .191 with 18 home runs and 45 RBIs in 60 games. It’s his first time on the IL this season and fourth time in his career. Chris Taylor and Michael Busch generally have split at third base while Muncy is sidelined.

The Dodgers entered Tuesday’s Freeway Series opener having won six straight in the series but trailing the all-time series 73-67.

Why bet on the Los Angeles Angels?

Angels star Shohei Ohtani is set for free agency this winter and the Dodgers can outspend any other team – many believe Ohtani will leave the Angels if the don’t finally make the playoffs. But they might do it. The Athletic polled around 100 MLB players recently and 57.2 percent said Ohtani will be playing for the Dodgers in 2024.

Ohtani has been purposefully evasive when asked about his future. In spring training, he kept reiterating that he was focusing on this season. The Dodgers refrained from spending big last offseason partly because they were saving up for a big push for Ohtani.

Ohtani pitched six innings of two-run ball last Thursday in leading the Angels to a 5-3 upset win in Texas. Ohtani needed 30 pitches to get through the first inning, with Adolis Garcia fighting through a 10-pitch at-bat. Ohtani gave up two runs in the third when he allowed three straight two-out hits. After that, Ohtani gave up just one more hit through six innings. Although he was at 62 pitches through three, he finished the sixth with 99.

“It’s definitely getting better,” Ohtani said. “I was checking mechanics between innings making adjustments, but there’s a lot more room to make it better.”

As a pitcher, Ohtani leads the majors in opponent batting average (.178) and ranks fourth in strikeouts (105). With the bat, he also leads the majors in home runs (23), total bases (171), XBH (40), slugging percentage (.626) and OPS (1.011), and is tied for first in RBIs (56).
