Andrew Wiggins missed his eighth straight game Sunday due to a family matter and it’s not clear if or when he will return this week. Let’s take a look at two intriguing early-week matchups around the NBA. Check back for NBA odds.

Atlanta Hawks vs. Miami Heat

  • When: Monday, March 6, 2023, 7:30 PM ET
  • Where: Miami-Dade Arena, Miami, FL
  • TV: NBA TV, Bally SE, Sun
  • Radio: 92.9 The Game (Hawks) // 560 The Joe WQAM (Heat)
  • Live Stream: NBA League Pass
  • NBA Betting Odds: TBA

First game of an NBA TV doubleheader. The Hawks sit eighth in the East and the Heat seventh – still within reason that one of the two could catch No. 6 Brooklyn to avoid the play-in tournament.

These teams played Saturday in Miami as well and the Heat won 117-109. Bam Adebayo scored 30 points and the Heat held Trae Young to a season-low eight points. Tyler Herro added 20 points, while Jimmy Butler and Caleb Martin finished with 15 apiece for the Heat, who extended their lead over the Hawks to 1 ½ games for seventh in the Eastern Conference. Young was 2 for 13 from the field. It was Young’s 17th game under double figures in his career. Miami won for only the second time in the last eight games.

Adebayo has scored 916 points in the paint this season, the second-most in the NBA. Additionally, he has scored at least 30 points 11 times this season, helping Miami to a 9-2 record over that span. Adebayo has scored in double-figures in all 60 games he has appeared in this season and in a career-long 76-straight dating back to last season, the fifth-longest streak in Heat history.

Young did have a career-high tying five steals in the loss. Young, who also dished out 10 assists, became just one of seven players in the NBA this season to record at least 10 assists and five steals (done eight times). In his last 13 games, Young has swiped at least one steal in all but one contest and has tallied two-or-more steals seven times over that span. Since Jan. 28, Young is averaging 25.2 points, 11.0 assists and 1.85 steals – the only player in the NBA over that time averaging at least 25.0 points, 10.0 assists and 1.75 steals.

Clint Capela notched his 26th double-double on Saturday, recording 16 points and 13 rebounds. It marked Capela’s fourth outing of the season with 15+ points and 10+ rebounds on .800% shooting from the field – one of only eight players with four-or-more such games in the league this season.

The Heat have won 21 games this season by five points or less, marking the second-most such victories during a single-season in team history. Among Miami’s 65 games this season, 35 of them have been decided by five points or less as the Heat has posted a 21-14 record.

This concludes the regular-season series with the Heat leading 2-1. This marks the seventh of eight occurrences this season in which the Heat will play the same opponent in consecutive games.

NBA Betting Pick: Heat

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Los Angeles Lakers

  • When: Tuesday, March 7, 2023, 10:00 PM ET
  • Where: Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles, California
  • TV: TNT
  • Radio: WMFS 92.9 FM (Grizzlies) // 710 ESPNLA (Lakers)
  • Live Stream: NBA League Pass
  • NBA Betting Odds: TBA

It was a terrible weekend for the Memphis Grizzlies as they lost forward Brandon Clarke to a season-ending torn left Achilles tear and also lost superstar Ja Morant to at least a two-game suspension.

Clarke began limping after a missed free throw in the last seconds of the first quarter of Friday’s game, which ended in a 113-97 loss to Denver. Clarke then fell at midcourt before heading to the locker room without putting any weight on his left leg. The season-ending tear was diagnosed Saturday.

Clarke, a key sixth man for Memphis, is averaging 10 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game this season for the Grizzlies, who sit second in the Western Conference. He inked a four-year, $52 million extension with Memphis in October.

Morant will miss at least one more game – he sat Sunday at the Clippers — after his Instagram Live video, in which he displayed what appeared to be a gun while at a nightclub early Saturday morning, prompted an investigation from the NBA. The All-Star guard, who was shirtless and rapping along with the music, could be seen holding up a handgun with his left hand. Morant deactivated both his Instagram and Twitter accounts on Saturday afternoon.

The Washington Post recently outlined multiple offseason incidents involving Morant, including one in which he allegedly punched a teenager playing pickup basketball at his house and another in which threats were allegedly made to a mall security guard. Memphis guard Dillon Brooks was suspended for Sunday’s game after getting his 16th technical of the season Friday but will be good to return here. After a player hits 16 technicals, every second tech afterward will trigger an additional one-game suspension.

The Lakers remain without LeBron James for at least two more weeks due to injury, putting their playoffs hopes in major jeopardy. Guard D’Angelo Russell missed his fifth straight game Sunday with an ankle injury.

The Lakers lead the all-time series 62-39 vs. Memphis and have a 40-38 record versus the Grizzlies since the team moved to Memphis. The Lakers are 27-15 all-time at Crypto.com Arena against the Grizzlies. The teams have split two meetings this season and this wraps up the series.

NBA Betting Pick: Lakers
