Pittsburgh’s Chances to Make the Playoffs

The Steelers had a slim 2.5% chance to make the playoffs entering their Week 17 clash against the Browns. After that win, though, Pittsburgh’s odds improved to 8%, which is much better odds than that of their final opponent in Week 18 in the Ravens at just 3.5%.

As of this writing, the Steelers are (+5) underdogs to win their crucial road matchup against the Ravens. Given that Ben Roethlisberger could very well be calling it a career after this season, coupled with a Baltimore team that’s on a five-game skid, there are plenty of reasons to believe that Big Ben has what it takes to secure one last NFL victory before officially hanging up his cleats.

Roethlisberger’s presumed swan song doesn’t need to have the two-time Super Bowl winner turn back the clock and put up gaudy numbers through the air. Pittsburgh won its game against the Browns this past week in large part due to the stellar effort from rookie Running back Najee Harris, who broke Franco Harris’ franchise record for most yards by a Steelers rookie running back with his 188 rushing yards and one rushing TD on 28 carries.

What the Steelers Need to Happen

Apart from winning their Week 18 game against the Ravens, here’s what the Steelers also need to happen in order to make the playoffs:

  • A Jacksonville Jaguars win over the Indianapolis Colts
  • The Los Angeles Chargers vs. Las Vegas Raiders game doesn’t end in a tie

The biggest concern for the Steelers that’s beyond their limits is Jacksonville pulling off an upset over Indianapolis. The Colts control their playoff destiny needing only a victory over the lowly Jacksonville, whereas the Jags would gladly take another loss to guarantee themselves the first-overall pick at the 2022 NFL Draft by having the worst record in the league at season’s end.
