Artemi Panarin became the third player in the Rangers’ storied history to score in overtime of a Game 7, following Derek Stepan (2015 Round 2 vs. Washington and Stephane Matteau (1994 conference finals vs. the Devils) Mika Zibanejad tied the game in the third period and assisted on the overtime goal to equal the franchise record for most assists (8) and points (11) in a series.

New York erased a 3-1 series deficit for the third time in franchise history and just the 31st to do so in NHL history. The Rangers improved to 8-1 (.889) in Game 7s contested at Madison Square Garden, which is the highest win percentage among all teams.

The Rangers and Hurricanes will meet in a best-of-seven series for the first time, following their best-of-five matchup during the 2020 Stanley Cup qualifiers. Carolina earned a 3-0 sweep as Sebastian Aho led the way with eight points.

Kochetkov won’t play in this series barring an injury to Antti Raanta, a former Rangers goaltender. And Raanta is the No. 1 because Frederik Andersen, the primary goaltender for much of the season, hasn’t played since mid-April due to injury. It doesn’t sound like Andersen will be available for any of this series. Raanta was great at home in the last round, a seven-game win over Boston, but a bit shaky on the road. Kochetkov did have to start one game with Raanta out injured.

Max Domi was the offensive star in Carolina’s 3-2 home win over Boston in Game 7 on Saturday as he had three points via two goals and an assist. Domi had largely been a non-factor this series, having accumulated nothing more than a pair of assists over the first six games against the Bruins. He more than made up for his quiet contests on Sunday, though, depositing a pair of second-period goals against Jeremy Swayman to boost Carolina to a 3-1 edge after earlier in the game picking up an assist on Teuvo Teravainen’s goal just before the initial intermission. Domi had managed just one multi-goal performance in 53 regular season matchups.

Teravainen scored his second career goal in a Game 7 (four total Game 7s played), adding to his tally against Washington in the 2019 first round. The Hurricanes/Whalers are now 8-0 all-time when scoring first in potential series-clinching games, including a 4-0 mark in Game 7s.

The Hurricanes won their sixth consecutive Game 7 dating to the 2006 conference finals and tied the Red Wings (6 straight from 1949 to 1964), Bruins (6 straight from 1983 to 1994) and Rangers (6 straight from 2012 to 2015) for the longest Game 7 winning streak in the history of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Carolina has reached the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the third time in four years. The Rangers, who advanced to the second round for the first time since 2017, became the first team in NHL history to win a series by claiming three consecutive comeback wins when facing elimination. New York beat Pittsburgh 4-3 in OT on Sunday.
