Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Roberto Carballes Baena Match Information

  • When: Tuesday, May 30, 2023
  • Where: Stade Roland Garros, Paris, France
  • TV: NBC, Tennis Channel
  • Live Stream: Peacock
  • 2023 French Open Betting Odds: Tsitsipas (-909) / Carballes Baena (+637)

Why Bet on Stefanos Tsitsipas?

It’s been two years since World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas reached the final stage in Roland Garros and he got off to a decent start in his next bid to win his maiden Grand Slam event by beating Jiri Vesely in the first round in straight sets. The Greek superstar won 83 percent of his first-serve points to dispatch his Czech opponent Sunday and advance to the second round.

Tsitsipas was on his way to an easy victory until he dropped the third set and squandered four match-point opportunities to Vesely before winning the fourth set in tiebreakers. He avoided getting eliminated from the first round of the French Open for the first time since making his Roland Garros debut in 2017.

All things considered, Tsitsipas is still quite the force on clay, going 13-4 on the surface leading up to the French Open, including losing in the final of the Barcelona Open to top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz. Tsitsipas won his only head-to-head matchup against Carballes Baena in Estoril back in 2018 to give him an extra edge against his second-round opponent.

Why Bet on Roberto Carballes Baena?

Having a much easier outing in the opening round, meanwhile, is 30-year-old Roberto Carballes Baena, who defeated Emilio Nova in straight sets. The Granada native has now advanced to the second round of the French Open in four of his last five trips.

Much of Carballes Baena’s success on clay this year was bolstered by his win over Alexandre Muller in Marrakech this past April for his second ATP Tour victory. Granted, the Grand Prix Hassan II is but a 250 Series tournament, as he’ll now be facing the best of the best in Roland Garros.

Although Carballes Baena lost his only matchup against Tsitsipas several years ago, he did give his more-decorated opponent a tough fight, as Tsitsipas needed all three sets before beating Carballes Baena in Estoril. The winning momentum the previous month is also giving the crafty Spaniard a ton of confidence in Roland Garros so far.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Roberto Carballes Baena Betting Trends

  • Tsitsipas has a 28-8 record this season thus far.
  • Tsitsipas is 91-29 lifetime on the clay courts.
  • Carballes Baena, meanwhile, is 69-68 lifetime on clay.
  • Carballes Baena is 14-12 in the current season.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Roberto Carballes Baena Expert Betting Prediction

Tsitsipas has been too consistent of late to fall to a relative unknown like Carballes Baena. However, the latter has proven to be competent on clay this season to give the former all he could handle in the second round. We predict this as a win for Tsitsipas, albeit in no fewer than four sets with Carballes Baena pushing the No. 5 seed close to the limit.
