Winners and Losers from the Aaron Rodgers Trade to the Jets

By Jeff Stinger

After months of speculation, the highly anticipated trade between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets finally happened. Four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers ends his decorated stint as the face of the Packers organization and is now the apparent savior of the QB-starved franchise in the Big Apple. Exactly who came out on top of this massive deal and who got the short end of the stick?

Nitrobetting is here to take your bets into the end zone this 2023 NFL season. This time, let’s find out the biggest winners and losers from the biggest trade this offseason that sent future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets.

Biggest Winners and Losers from the Aaron Rodgers Trade

Winner: New York Jets

It goes without saying that this is the most impactful trade that the Jets have made at the QB position since acquiring another legendary Packers QB, Brett Favre, back in 2008. New York has not had an MVP-winning quarterback on its team since Joe Namath, and it’s Aaron Rodgers who could certainly break that curse this upcoming season with plenty left in his 39-year-old tank.

Gang Green nation will certainly be revitalized with Rodgers’ arrival, as his name value alone will draw more fans and merchandise sales in an instant. He will also be reunited with former Green Bay offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who was Rodgers’ confidant on the sidelines during his MVP-winning campaigns in 2020 and 2021. Simply put, A-God immediately makes the Jets title contenders, especially with the wealth of young talent that was on full display from their relatively successful 2022 season.

Loser: The Rest of the AFC East

Rodgers’ presence in the AFC East only means bad news for the Jets’ division rivals. The Patriots, Bills, and Dolphins have all been to the postseason recently, and New York can now throw its name into the hat as a strong contender for the Lombardi Trophy in 2023.

For the majority of football fans, the AFC East will now be the most intriguing division to follow. We’re in for a treat as Rodgers will go head-to-head against the likes of Josh Allen and Tua Tagovailoa twice a year, and New England is still a real threat under Bill Belichick despite the Pats’ lack of an elite QB under center.

Winner: Green Bay Packers

It may be the bitterest pill to swallow, but this was the best move the Packers can make to move on from the drawn-out tension between Rodgers and the team’s front office. Green Bay received a total of four draft picks for Rodgers, including swapping places with New York for the 13th-overall pick in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.

With better draft capital, the Packers can begin their rebuild anew without having to endure the drama that Rodgers put them in. They’re still a well-run organization and have a promising young QB in Jordan Love to finally put to the test. Green Bay has had tremendous luck with QBs for the past three decades, and who’s to say that Love or a future play-caller taken from the draft will keep the Packers in Super Bowl contention given how well the Rodgers and Favre eras in Lambeau have gone.

Loser: Lamar Jackson

All but one of the available big-name QBs this offseason have found new deals and/or new homes, all except for another former league MVP, Lamar Jackson. The Ravens have played hardball with Jackson’s possible contract extension this offseason and Jackson serving as his own agent himself in negotiations has not done the 26-year-old phenom any favors at all.

Now that Rodgers is officially named the Jets’ QB, that’s one more destination that has closed its door on Lamar. While we understand that Jackson was to get paid like a top-five QB in the NFL – Jalen Hurts’ recently signed, record-breaking contract extension also added more fuel to the fire – it’s becoming more and more apparent that Jackson might have to endure playing in Baltimore for one more season as the market for his talent has pretty much dried up.
